We're moving house soon and I need to look at internet options but i'm scratching my head a little.

We'll be moving from a Wellington CBD apartment to a house in Southgate (above Island Bay) also in Wellington. We have no 4G coverage and Vodafone has confirmed that there is no cable service to my house (even though their online checker says there is grrr.) nor is VDSL an option. So we're stuck with plain ol dsl.

Here's the rub, the DSL prices are on par, or more, with every other internet option I can find.

What the he!!?

ADSL1 or ADSL2+? A lot of the pricing is made up of line rental does not matter what speed you get

ADSL2+ I think, but I've just been comparing options available from general website enquiries and some don't define what type of ADSL we have available. Chorus shows us as having 2+ availability.

I just find it hard to swallow that I should pay more than a UFB connection when i'm on older technology, with far less speed so i'll never use as much data as someone on UFB.

Are you telling me that the amount of data being used is irrelevant when it comes to the final cost of a internet connection?

It may be that because people in your new location have no real choice...they pay a higher price *because* they don't have another option. Monopoly rent.

You're paying a higher price because you don't really have any choice. A.k.a. "Capitalism" (or at least the end-game in capitalism).

Vodafone increased the price of its ADSL and VDSL plans by $5 per month as a result of the Chorus price increases. That didn't apply to UFB or cable, so the base ADSL plan now costs slightly more than than the base plans of the faster services.

Edit: Presumably other ISPs had similar increases.

There are plenty of other houses in the city, just move somewhere with decent internet if it's important.

To me, verifying the internet connectivity options should be one of the first things you research when considering a house.

To me, verifying the internet connectivity options should be one of the first things you research when considering a house.

I don't think you understand how hard it is to buy a first home in Wellington (or anywhere where I can get work) so 'just move' isn't even a laughable option for me right now.

Internet speeds aren't the be all to end all of my existence, I simply didn't expect an old technology to cost more than the new.

Me, too.....but if she-who-must-be-obeyed loves the house with no Internet (she don't care - a techo-phobe or fellow traveller who looks at your tech dependency and sees weakness) then such flexibility isn't always possible.

Must be a pretty unique property up there to have no cable because that covers all of the area.

4G coverage around most of that area is fine on Vodafone, but indoors might give slightly different results.

Yeah, I know. The guy I spoke to didn't know how to discuss the options, and why cable wasn't available, so I didn't press it. I also should have clarified, no Spark 4G (that's who i use for my cellular connection)

I agree. Southgate is a recent subdivision (70's as I recall), and I thought went down all of it. Sure it's not voda just parrotting bad records?

Using the online Vodafone checker it shows as Cable being available so I was running with that until they called back and said it wouldn't be an option. I don't know how to force the matter and find out exactly why this is the case.

In nearby Island Bay:

ADSL2 - gives 12/1 Mbps (with a master filter)
HFC cable - lots of problems with peak congestion (see the Krapi cable congestion thread)

But it's a nice place to live ...

Yeah, the Krapi Cable thread is somewhat worrying, but that being said, in off peak times still seems to perform marvelously. I have the ability to schedule the majority of my internet use to happen outside of peak times so this doesn't worry me *too* much.
