Hey team,

So I'm wondering if anyone has been around the Chorus ONT and knows what data it sends back to Chorus?

We saw that Ubiquiti have released the Nano G and saw it supports GPON.. Now I wouldnt be looking at it for a replacement for a ONT, but could it be?

What sort of data does a device like the Nano G need to be able to send to chorus?

Just out of curiosity!

Chorus uses Nokia OLTs which doesn't look like it's supported by this ONT.

Also I don't think you're allowed to have your ONT with Chorus.

The ONT is managed by a central provisioning system - your serial number must match.

So all that's sent back is the serial number?

Has anyone spoken to someone in that part of chorus around this?

Won't work - Chorus need to be able to provision ONT's remotely and I am sure as hell they won't allow you to use your own. In-fact if you try, I am sure they'll send black helecopters after you.

No it won't work and never will. GPON is a highly integrated solution where ONT and OLU need to be fully compatible with each other.

The only option at present for 3rd party is Bitstream4 which allows the use of a Chorus supplied SFP.

A chorus retailer should be able to get those types of connections for you, but you wouldnt want to pay the price.

Unless you are doing something VERY specific I wouldn't see the point in trying to terminate your own fibre.

...also because that's what BS4 is for.. or other fibre services like DFAS.

I'm not sure of the actual load of the power supply (vs rated capacity) but at a rough guess probably around 5c per day.

I think they are rated for 12v 1A

So thats 12v x 1A = 12 watts

(12 watts x 24 hours) x 30 days = 8640 watt hours.

8640 / 1000 = 8.64kwh

Assuming 1kwh unit of power is 24 cents (check your power bill) then

8.64kwh x $0.24 = $2.07 per month or 6.9 cents per day.

That is the maximum the power supply can supply power to the ONT.

The power supply is usually designed to be double what the device consumes so we could assume that the ONT actually only uses about half that so its more like $1.05 per month.

Nokia? I didn't know...

The ONT is the Chorus demarcation, its a point in the network thats owned by Chorus and any changes to it could involve some liability.

Time to find a new industry!
