I'd normally give it an extra day to be safe.

If you're doing a transfer does that not automatically close the original account?

Thinking this is the best idea to avoid potentially being without internet for a day. So, no issues with having two active at the same time?

I have to give current provider a cancellation date, and separately give new provider an activation date.

Yeah, that ^^

If not moving house, only provider. Pretty sure it's the norm to take care of most of it at once by notifying your new one only and they put the request in on behalf. You just have to do it before the 30day window re-starts.

For moving location, Some providers can do it seamless by standing up the 2nd ONT port and if the one leaving has screwed their change up. As believe there is still a lock (RQ req?) put on if a cancellation request is made too late, that no new one can be added.

I got stung last time I changed providers with being charged for an extra month, not knowing about the 30 day notice period, so making sure not to fall into the same trap this time. I've changing activation date to the day before cancellation. Thanks for the tips all.

"Do NOT start by contacting your current ISP. If you do this, it’ll screw everything up"

Welp, that's what I did (giving them the 30 days notice). Hoping it works out ok..

Oh dear.

Unsure if it still will. But previously where the issue rose, as explained in the fails-ville section. Was that tends to put a 'work pending' flag on the port. That is 'I need to disconnect this within the next 30 days'

Now when mr new ISP comes along, and goes. I need a connection made to this port. The system would go 'go away - I got something within the next 30 days already, wait your turn'.

So would need to wait till the end of that disconnect completion to then initiate the new one.

Result = no internet in the middle.

But if you got the new one in first, the disconnect doesn't matter. As it was within the notice period and would be over-ruled.

2nd ONT port option was made available to stand up the 2nd and use that for overlap.

Fibre or not?

If Fibre, all Chorus ONTs have 4 ports available (used by your ISPs router).  Ask your new ISP to use one of the other ports.  This allows you to overlap to your hearts content although for the overlap period you are paying both ISPs.

In my case I have a Model 300 Chorus ONT (ONT Model Type 300 | Chorus).  My old ISP was using LAN1.  My new ISP was set up on LAN2.  I had a week of overlap.  When the new ISPs router arrived I installed it to the LAN2 port and turned it on morning and evening to see if I had service.  The new ISP was activated 2 days late.  I then swapped one device to the new router and monitored connection stats for a day (all flawless as expected). I then moved all devices to the new router.  For days 4-7 I had the option (never needed) to move everything back to the old ISP's router.  I could then remove and return my old ISP's router.

The only device that can go out of service is your 'landline' if it comes through VOIP and you use the ISPs ATA.  I left my phones on the old ISP's router until VOIP went down, then moved to the new ISP's router.  There was a gap in service but it was not long enough to cause me to log a fault.

Fibre, and I also have the 300 model. So, shouldn't be any issues? I didn't realise that the isp specifies which LAN port they use - so, if I were to try one of the others, the internet wouldn't connect?

That is correct.

The risks are either you pay an extra month or if anything wrong happens (and it happens a lot) the old provider kills your service before it is transferred.

The biggest risk is if the old provider puts in a cancellation order with the LFC before the new provider puts in a transfer order, then you are in a situation where the primary port on the ONT is effectively locked until the cancellation goes through
