Hey, I’ve been looking for the cheapest ISP and it seems like Intune.nz and Local Tech in Wellington are offering double the speed of their competitors (2000 up and down for a decent price), but i can’t really find any info on if they are good or not. (If you google Intune it just brings up the Microsoft Product)

Has anyone had any experience with them? Is it best to just go with something a little more expensive but established, i’m not the most knowledgeable person when it comes to stuff like this.

1) Do you NEED hyperfibre ? Its pretty overkill for 97% of households.

2) They appear to be reselling Voyager, who is a good ISP, but you'll be relying on Intune's support, rather than the known good support from Voyager - Intune may have good support, who knows.

3) Youve said yourself you're not very good with this stuff, so do you know what router to get to take advantage of hyperfibre ?

We’ve been having issues with congestion and dropped connections at night and it’s the same price we are paying 2degrees currently for half the bandwidth, and we have the correct router.

If you are around the Porirua CBD (and fringe areas) and some areas of the hutt they have their own fibre in the ground

Prices in those areas will be significantly cheaper than if you use your local LFC

Hey Guys,

I own LocalTech - InTune Technologies ltd.

Feel free to reach out. I live in raumati and come down to wellington every work day. Im only small but the connection is just as good as anyone elses, but im local so if there is an issue il help. Il always be straight up and give you the advice you need.

I used to provide tech support between isp and the end user for 20 years before i started this. So i kniw my stuff, and happy to help where needed. We are direct Chorus Resellers but we are also partnered with Voyager for our internet bandwidth.

We have a bunch of hyperfibre users but really... latency is where  its at, and youll get about the same regardless of what your top speed is. So if you dont need it. Save a few bucks and go with maxi 920. For $109 Or even just the standard 500/100 for $79. We have static IPs available as well if you need ine.

i’m in a large flat with a few people who upload and download large files, and there have been lots of complaints of dropped connection at night time, i’m currently looking at upgrading the network and $5 more a month for double the speed seems reasonable. I upgraded the router to a mesh one to see if that will fix it and i’ve got a few weeks to figure stuff out, i am mostly looking at if Intune is a good ISP regardless of speed

I'd start with a very hard and long look at your internal network, devices and settings. Most of the time, speed problems are inside your LAN.

Once you have eliminated all problems, then think about the ISP.

How far does your own fibre in the ground in Porirua go?

Im really not one to toot my own horn... but were the best. Haha

Isps are mostly the same these days. As mentioned,, the difference come down to support. And in the wellington region, im the best support youll find.

The people I have helped that had that issue was either a junk consumer grade router that couldn't handle the jandal, or a crap CGNAT implementation on their poor quality ISP that they chose to use.

Move to unifi gear and get a static IP and one was sorted, another was unifi and change ISP to one that was not bad. The same one was involved in both cases but only one person was able to get a proper IP address without paying for it from the bad support service. The other decided to just hop over to xtra. Bittorrent was the one thing that would wipe the connection out and make things just not load at all, and once on the good router and no ISP connection tracking that was failing, it was possible for 100s of megabits of torrents to come down and the rest of the household be ok with their work VPNs and teams and stuff with no problems at all.

This sounds like an internal network problem - have you done any troubleshooting with 2degrees though?

Also, just to help out.

Here are a few tips to diagnose your issues at home as when on fibre, your dropouts are unlikely to be because of your service provider.

Without knowing your setup these are just generally useful things to keep in mind.

When to blame your ISP...

if you have connected to wifi but your phone is saying "connected but without internet" or you had a notice saying the internet is not available but that you could still connect to the network if you want to.

If you have internet and get a message saying you have lost internet but are still connected to wifi

When not to blame the ISP...

Almost everything else.

If your wifi is not showing and not connected.

If your wifi is there but wont let you connect.

If your connected to the internet but you get a message saying you have lost connection to the network.

If you have not internet over wifi but someone else has internet while using the same wifi.

I can help you fix these issues but they are not the problem of the isp.

Also, as a home user that isnt into networking, dont buy a unifi or ubiquity router. The right router depends on the layout of your house. Brand is irrelevant if your only goal is to have reliable internet. Get a TP-link, or Grandstream. There are many brands that cator to the everyday home user.. dont spend more money on features you cant use or dont care to setup properly.
