Taipo: I've been in Kirwee since 1992 and used dialup then. At times the 'broadband' speed is not much better now than it was then. I write software for a living so I find that I have to drive back to CH if I need to work in the evening.
Just registering my frustration with the 'broadband' speed in Kirwee.

As this has been quoted many times look for a wireless provider if you really rely off speed, you're getting what you pay for in regards to a best effort service.

Firstly, you replies borrder on condescending and you add little value to this forum.

Secondly, are you really so sad an individual that you resort to stalking people on Facebook?

Thirdly, any upgrade to any exchange should be to a GB connection given all of us are going to use more data and not less.

I have the information I need, you all know I have written to ComCom and they were not interested, I wrote to MBIE and they have not replied, essentially we are screwed until someone fronts up some cash to pay for an upgrade.

Condescending? No...my apologies, I was not meant to come across that way.
But I do have to ask - what makes you think you should jump the queue ahead of some bigger places that aren't in line for an upgrade either? Remember, you have wireless options available. A lot of people don't.

Also - I would hit up Amy Adams on her comments. She told you if National got in again there would be an "RBI 3" and Kirwee would be upgraded (unless I misunderstood). What happened with that?

I'd be curious to see what bigger towns have not been upgraded? Wireless is borderline in Kirwee. Cell reception, both 2g and 3G is marginal at best but 4g 700mhz is coming. Data caps make wireless pretty much useless. We will give you fast internet but you can only use 30gb, and for that privilege the clost is double DSL.

Amy Adams and I are in regular communication, my latest correspondence is a few weeks ago and I asked for the RBI 3 money to be freed up for towns like Kirwee to be properly connected.

At least we now know the Commerce Commission don't care about the product they're responsible for.

Chorus offering to increase the BUBA handover dimensioning from 75kbps to 150kbps per user would have made a big difference in some areas, but the Commerce Commission rejected this, meaning those who would have received significant benefit from this change still have to suffer from a degraded experience.

I've had several discussions with my ISP. I've sent ping plots, trace route logs etc etc but I don't think they really care too much so I've given up. My experience is that it's often faster to access some sites in NZ from New Caledonia than from Kirwee.

There is nothing a any ISP can do to fix this issue. The issue is congested, which has caused a lot of impact across NZ in the last 6 or so months with lots of people attempting to download the entire internet on their unlimited connections.

What you do have to remember is that your service meets the requirements set in place for regulated broadband by the Commerce Commission and MBIE, hence why I always tell people to contact these organisations.

Chorus would *love* to replace every piece of ATM based kit in the country as it would make their network far more efficient, but they lack the money to do this.

Hey Chris, this is turning into our famous Outram thread now which got nowhere. When you make claims like these on a public site you're not really doing yourself or others any favors. The reason you have not got "super fast" internet has been explained many times with solutions on how to fix (all cost money) except you're simply not wanting to investigate options that'll cost a little more than your residential connection (wireless ISP's for example can do custom deals). From my point of view the speeds look 100% usable so your internet connection is doing it's job and that (being a best effort service) is what you're paying for. Unless if you want to front up the costs for upgrading your equipment you're not going to get anywhere by complaining.

I can think of at-least 10 places not on the RBI that should be and these places currently operate off Satellite broadband and have a phone exchange but with no xDSL equipment, I am sure they'll appreciate this sort of connection or even a connection provided by a Conklin over Satellite.

I realise that the connection may meet the requirements set out by the commerce commission and others who feel that the speed of the connection is 100% usable.
I'm just saying that the connection at Kirwee is not 100% usable for my purposes where (for example) periods of no traffic (no response to packets sent) for more than 30 seconds can routinely occur during the evening.
I also realise that I can pay for satellite (with it's own limitations) and I can also continue to drive back to Christchurch.

I'm just not wanting the people who sit in their offices in Wellington to think that everything and everyone is happy.

Assuming you're meaning Chorus people who sit in their offices in Wellington, they're fully aware of such problems and that they exist. Nobody is in denial there is a problem, and nobody would not want to fix the issue if they could.

Ultimately at the end of the day the issue comes down to money. The Commerce Commission have made it quite clear they have no interest in the issue, despite broadband being a fully regulated offering. I don't know wether they're aware of how painful the experience which is why I always tell people to contact them. Ultimately they've slashed the price Chorus can charge for copper services meaning there is less money to be spent upgrading parts of the network.

And it's also untrue to say that people need to live in main centres to get fast internet. There are tens of thousands of rural users who now get VDSL2 speeds of up to 70Mbps as part of the RBI rollout - in the next year or so another 4 areas in your vicinity including one of the existing 4 DSLAMS (I'd presume a Conklin) fed off the Kirwee exchange will get new RBI cabinets delivering VDSL2 and ADSL2+

It's also worth noting that urban users are subsidising the cost of upgrading rural services with over $50 million per year. It's become quite clear from a number of recent threads on here that when Chorus have approached some communities with pricing to upgrade infrastructure that they have not been interested, even when the price has been heavily subsidized down to figures as low as $50000. At the end of the day broadband solutions in some rural areas is going to require communities getting together and building their own solutions, and there is no reason why some who are suffering from poor broadband now can't have services that are as good as urban broadband apart from the fact they don't seem willing to invest any of their own money to do so, or accept that they may need to pay more than they do at present.

EA networks is the local electrical lines company for the Mid Canterbury area.

They also are supply fibre connections but;

There offering is restricted(1) to the area bounded by the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers, and

Coverage is limited, usually in conjunction with their high voltage distribution network or in Ashburton town centre.

(1)Very limited coverage is also available in the Leeston Lincoln area.
