Hi,

Does anyone have access to Chorus systems to see what is happening at the Kirwee exchange. About 2 weeks ago our internet peak speeds dropped from 2mbps with a latency of ~50ms to .5 with a latency of 200+ ms

I wrote a post on the Kirwee community page on Facebook (I was desperate) and there are lots do responses from lots of different ISPS (spark, Vodafone, slingshot) with everyone saying the same thing.

My day time rates have also dropped from about 5mb down with a Ping response of 35ms to about 2.5mb down with a Ping response of 50+ms

I'm pretty vigilant on my internet speeds as they are generally average to poor so this is a noticeable drop from late August.

I've had chorus out twice and they have confirmed my internal wiring is fine(my sync speeds are good at around 6400k down) but the throughput has dropped suddenly.

So, my question is, does anyone have access to Chorus systems to see what is happening to resolve the issues at the Kirwee exchange? I have been told that this ha been escalated internally at Chorus but no one can see more than this.

Any help would be appreciated.

A fairly typical guess would be saturation of the ADSL1 ATM DSLAM you're on, probably caused by as few as 2-3 people saturating things on unlimited plans.

Log a throughput issue with your ISP (Also try get others to aswell via the comunnity FB page) so they can let chorus know.
Just make sure that your ISP doesn't truckroll the job(where they actually send a technican out)  otherwise you will be charged a No Fault Fee.

Done all of that. Logged job with ISP (3 now actually), Chorus have been twice and no resolution. According to Slingshot this is with Chorus, so my question is can anyone see what Chorus are doing or planning to do to help resolve this?

I think you will find it's working as designed and not actually a fault

I'd agree with you JohnR except it started really slowly one day out of the blue ( was never fast) but .5 at peak compared to 2mb and ping dropping from 35 -50ms to 200- 500ms.

Not uncommon for that to be the case, You dont know whether Chorus had to take some capacity from it or if 2 neighbors got unlimited plans and just wreck the connection 24/7.
I wish they have regulated data caps for BUBA customers.

So, are you saying in 2014, a couple of users can bring an entire community network down?

Have a read of the Outram thread & anything that appears in the search for Conklin, You will find how very real of a problem this is for ASAM and Conklin users.

It's not "bringing it down". Granted, it's not as fast as you would like it to be. But - as John says - it's working as designed.
And yes, do read the Outram thread.
There are other options available - how much data do you use in a month? Are you right in the middle of Kirwee, or where are you located?

Chorus's map says Kirwee has ADSL1 (by the looks of it) but no fibre or RBI. Wireless may be a better option for you.

Technically, not down, but 10 minutes to download a 12mb file last night and it is not possible to watch any streaming video, so working as designed shows bloody poor planning from both ISP's and Chorus.

It seems ridiculous that we pay the same as towns nearby who have 100mb connections and no issues but we have ( as I understand it) 20 year old switches with no plans to upgrade.

I love in Kirwee township (2.2km from exchange according to Chorus) with sync rates of 6400/880 and use about 50gb of data per month. Wireless plans are limited to 30gb and are about twice as expensive.

Hi Chris,

We have a few customers in this area, The Kirwee exchange area has 5 DSLAM's one in the Kirwee exchange building which is an ISAM and the other 4 which are ASAM's with multiple E1 (2Mbps each up to 4 in each ASAM) backhaul's.

The ISAM in the main exchange should be fine, and so you'd assume you are not connected to this but are connected to one of the cabinets. There is however good and bad news as some of the cabinets have RBI upgrades scheduled and some don't. if you can provide your approx address we can have a look and see where you are connected to and if an upgrade is scheduled.

Thanks,
The Ralph

The ASAM you're being provided service from will probably be about 7-8 years old.

Your ASAM isn't being upgraded as part of RBI however wireless RBI is available to you which ultimately the solution for areas where infrastructure isn't being upgraded.

There isn't any point arguing the issue as there are plenty of other recent threads discussing these very same issues. It is however safe to say that nothing will change any time soon. Your connection meets the MBIE and Commerce Commission product requirements for regulated broadband, and they are the people you should be contacting to complain about the issue.

I don't quite think the Conklins are 20 years old - I didn't know anyone with the internet in 1994. 10 years old, yes, possibly. (Hopefully sbiddle will correct me if I'm wrong). Edit, which he did smile

If you can supply your address (even the street name would be a good start) more information can be provided as to whether any upgrades are planned or not.

Hi,

We are in Thorndon Close, I understand that we are not getting any upgrade. We are considering moving, can you please see what houses in Glen Oak Drive in Kirwee are connected to?

When you say "we should be fine" does this mean there is possibly so etching else going on?

I'd move to Snap if you could assure me of good speeds....

Chris.
