Why get hyper fibre when you can get super fast 5G wireless instead?

40GB per month? That's not enough for me at all. And the 5G coverage is another problem.

I contacted MyRepublic and they are working on a 4Gbps connection. I will post the test result here when the installation is done.

I tried Orcon once and had a bad experience with the speed. The 1Gbps connection only hitted 700Mbps to NZ, 500Mbps to AU and 300Mbps to US East. I switched to 2d and it's much better. Hope they can provide hyperfibre soon.

You should actually go Orcon over MyRepublic due to international connectivity if you actually want to take advantage of your 4Gbit connection. You only need to do a quick search of Geekzone if you want to understand why MyRepublic are so bad.

Just coming from the Orcon thread I made.

So what 'set-up' would take full advantage of 4Gbits? 

I know that I would have to invest in a 10Gbits network card. What about the wifi set up?

would need AX i.e. wifi 6 with 4x4 (in your devices - most only have 2x2) and that gets circa 1.6Gbits, so not really maxing it out and good luck with Wifi hitting those in real world Internet uses...

As I mentioned, last year, my gigabit connection provided by Orcon was not good either. The speed to NZ local server is no more than 800Mbps, and the speed to US East is only 200-300Mbps. It is even slower in real working scene. They also charged me a early termination fee and another month fee when I left. I switched to 2d and it's really great. But 2d is not going to provide any hyperfibre products in a short time, right?

Is MyRepublic even worse? When I talked to MyRepublic, it's quite easy to contact them and let them call me. The service is fine actually. I saw speed testing results from Digmarx in this thread, it seems to be acceptable. At least the speed to US East (LA) is much more than 300Mbps. Speed in NZ seems to be fine too. I also need to transfer files between different places in NZ.

Do not use any kind of WiFi if you need speed, except your mobile devices and smart home devices. I tested many AX routers with my friends. None of them really works in real scene. You cannot keep everything close to your WiFi AP/router. The speed drops really fast along with the distance.

Try to use 10Gbps/40Gbps wired network at home. 10Gbps optical devices for home/small business are really cheap now if you shop wisely. For example, new models from Mikrotik. I didn't spend much actually. The second-hand 40Gbps switch with 12 ports only costed me $200.

Agree @eong, but they did ask about wifi... and AX is the "answer" but as you note. limited value.

hio77: Orcon have vocus to back their international bandwidth so I doubt there would be any issues there.


Outside of any issues with your local machine, tcp stack etc...

I'd highly suspect any throughput issues you were having likely have to do with the scheduling of packets.

Particularly when you go international, it doesn't take much to drop into a sawtooth.
I've seen just leaving native pipes cause all sorts of issues. But equally over running can do this :)

I contacted Orcon, but Orcon refused to have a investigation and said everything was good as it was more than 500Mbps.

But sorry I was not good with only 700Mbps testing speed and 500Mbps real transfer speed to another place in the same city.

After swithing to 2d, I can hit more than 900Mbps in speed testing and same-city file transfer scene. I do not think the cause of slow speed is on my side.
