stevehodge: I remember someone earlier in the thread saying that it is possible to be too close to the cabinet (I think 100m is supposed to be the minimum). The Chorus tech actually ran a cable around his house just to lengthen the drop.

wouldn't too close simply be a case of needing to lower the power output though? rather than something rather abrupt as adding length to the cable..

I'm not sure exactly what the issue is. I would have thought the power level could simply be reduce too. But it's been mentioned a couple of times:

"Need to be about 100m away otherwise it can be too noisy"

"i live so close to the cabinet that i had to run a cable around the house to get my VDSL to stand up as the cable from the cabinet to the ETP was only about 15meters"

I'm not sure about that guy, he made a few claims but had no real evidence, he didn't seem very genuine.
But I guess the being too close thing makes sense, I just don't believe him about the profile changing having to be manual which he seemed so sure about because of various reasons he wasn't prepared to discuss.

He wasn't the only one saying you needed to get put on 17a manually back then. I think it was also mentioned by Napster at one point (he was also on 17a). It definitely used to be the case that you had to request it via your ISP and then Chorus/Telecom would make the change manually. See this thread complaining that Chorus/Telecom stopped doing it. It's only since Feb this year that changes to 17a have been happening automatically.

I found moving from 8b to 17a on our 150m line gave less errors and more stability over all.

That line is clean but with low snr across the spectrum.

It's possible to sync vdsl by plugging a vdsl modem straight into the cabinet so I don't believe the line to short theory.

I got 50.7mb first sync at 80m, but if I upgrade to the latest firmware I can only manage a 40mb sync. I don't think the newer firmware is best for some lines.

Going to a better DLM level usually results in an increased sync rate so it's making a difference indirectly. I haven't notice consistent improvements in anyone's sync over time on the same DLM level. It's a bit hard to tell though because most resyncs early on come with a DLM change anyway.
