Damager: My line seems to good enough for 17a but still on DLM-1 even after the master splitter was installed on 30 April 2013

while there is a pattern to 17a, most lines have taken quite a history before moving.. while others, moved within the first week.

DLM is a rather confusing as nothing we know is 100% .. it is a constantly changing thing it would seem, new rules, changes to ranges..

while we can look at a line and say yeh, that line very well is due for 17a, cant be sure about it. for whatever reason that line may never get 17a..

Yeah, that's how I read it. You can't request 17a. He may not realise that people are being put on 17a again (presumably by DLM).

Just to be clear: the profile (17a) is a different thing entirely to the DLM level (DLM-1). People on 17a connections also have a DLM level and it is not necessarily DLM-1. I haven't seen anyone who wasn't on DLM-1 put on 17a, but I have personally been downgraded to DLM-2 without losing the 17a profile (downgraded due to my Fritz spontaneously rebooting a bunch of times).

2:55am: Internet goes down,
2:56am: I Log into the Fritz to see why
See's at ton of PPPoE error: Timeout.

2:59am: DSL not responding (no DSL synchronization).

3:07am: Internet's back.

Not sure whats going on here... Maybe my line is being tested by the DLM or something. I do however now have Bitswap on.

Altho my sync rate has gone up a few bytes since the first sync, I had 39560 on my first day of sync and now I have 39928.

hi guys ... has anyone got a VDSL with attenuation of 20dB - what speeds are you getting??

(I'm thinking of going to the telecom VDSL but no one there has first hand experience about my attenuation complication)

thats how i thought it was, from that, i dont see how it could be due to error rate issues.. but ah well, thats picking at the words a tad..

with 20db? chances are you wont be allowed.. 10.8 is the limit..

@Joker97: What is the complication? Have they done a prequal and if so what was the attenuation from the prequal. Chorus have a cutoff of 10.8db for VDSL, but that is a measurement that they take and excludes your on premise wiring I believe, so going by what your ADSL modem shows won't necessarily mean you can't get VDSL.... having said that 20db is very high and I'd sort that our first (unless it just caused by distance to exchange\cabinet in which case I doubt they will provision VDSL for you)

@joker97: Hmm, that's the highest we've seen! Check out the first post for other line examples up to 15db. My estimate for 20db is that should be ~25mbit. How far away from the cabinet are you?

how do i know how far from the cabinet I am?

thanks for the tips - i'd hate for all my connection to be fixed and then turns out worse than my ADSL! (i've applied online to telecom and waiting an answer. you know, i'm happy with ADSL if my VDSL is not going to be top notch)

(Not sure if it'll work right now though - I think chorus website\systems are having technical difficulties at the moment. Might need to wait for them to resolve that)

EDIT: This method requires that you estimate your loop length from a map. Keep in mind that it won't be a straight line, and it might even go the opposite direction down your street then back around towards the cabinet. Basically it's useful to get a rough estimate, and you can confirm if you ARE too far using this method, but it doesn't tell you where the line actually runs under the ground... ;-)

that is so weird, my house is bang in the middle of a hexagon in the exchange and the cabinet lies bang in one CORNER of the hexagon! you'd think the cabinet would be bang in the middle (my house!)?

Bitswap does not change your sync rate at all. Bitswap means that a bit allocated to one frequency can be reallocated to another frequency (the bit is swapped to another frequency). The net result is the same number of bits allocated overall and therefore the same sync rate.

What bitswap can do is to reduce errors by reallocating bits from frequencies that have become noisy since the connection was established. Note that bitswap can be switched on or off without a resync. I think that bitswap going from off to on indicates that the system has detected a falling SNR at particular frequencies.

FYI I whipped up this graph of previous poster's attenuation vs distance to the cabinet and extrapolated it out to ~800m which might be useful.

That said, this is not a particularly accurate way to measure as distance by road doesn't necessarily correspond directly to line distance.

What's your internal wiring like?

That's not unusual. Pure idle specualation\guess as I don't work in this space, but I think it sort of makes sense if you think that most people used to connected direct to the exchange then cabinets were added later. Connecting that way means that could reuse the existing copper??

Anyway, as Sam says, what's your house wiring like?

i think my house wiring is not the best ... but let me explain and then you can decide:

i believe I can only connect to broadband at one phone outlet (single hole). that particular phone outlet also lets you connect to phone line. i don't think the modem gets broadband at the other outlets (at least 4 others), but I will have to check.
