MrPanda:

I completely get what you mean. I have spoken to spark and the hyperfibre service won't be available till June next year.

This is super useful information, do we know any other providers plans - I'd love to know when 2d are going to get it.

My biggest concern is that I put in an order for hyperfibre with a provider I don't really like and then it's instantly available somewhere better, I don't mind paying an exit fee I just don't want to instantly regret my decision to sign up to Orcon.

I agree with you, mostly. Most people do not really need it.  But this is a geek forum, right? We are talking about bleeding edge technologies, trying them and sharing experience. Correct me if I am wrong.

Sure, but since this is a geekforum you can expect people that know about a subject to let you know when what you are asking for might not be what you want.

For instance: If you have old wifi equipment with bad reception as your main access to the internet, and expect to get 4 Mbit/s speeds when you get Hyperfibre, you are going to be very disappointed and have wasted a lot of money.

Isn't it better to be told that, then people just cheering someone on to buy a package that will not help them?

Wait, people paying for 4 Gbps expect to use WiFi instead of high speed ethernet cables?

Bonkers.

😬

i highly doubt that date would be accurate as its commercially sensitive information and they are unlikely to give that out to a call center member let alone a customer asking about it

I couldn't see a use case for hyperfibre as most people use wifi!

just curious, how is the wiring done now? as the ONT is the router, so they must install like a fiber plug in the wall?

no different to how it was done in the past, ONT connect to the ITP via a short fibre lead and ONT is connected to your devices instead of going through a router.

Here's an example install from someone who has it in Akl! Nice!

Any chance we can get speed test results to Melbourne?

I don't think anyone has answered the question if an ONT swap is required moving between normal fibre vs hyperfibre plans? Or is it only one way and the new ONT is compatible with existing plans?

yes you require an ONT swap for hyperfibre as the current ONT's cant do greater than 1Gbps.

Yes I knew that. But what about downgrading

If you have a hyperfibre ONT and downgrade to the 1G service you retain the hyperfibre ONT.

@zyo The ONT would not need changing to go back to Gb or below

The new ONT is backwards compatible with 1Gbps plan so I would have thought that if you downgrade your plan you would still keep the new ONT.

Further clarification, the Hyperfibre ONT does not support ONT/Voice (it does support voip when in gateway mode though which is a little odd) so if you order an NGA service (1G or less) with ONT/Voice a downgrade will be needed. Chorus is also not supporting secondary services on the Hyperfibre ONT. Also of note the xs-250-wx-a is not wall mountable it needs to sit on a flat surface.
