So, my SamKnows box has been spewing utterly meaningless data since the day I plugged it in and the SamKnows team, after initially acknowledging my tech request have been silent for weeks now.  I suspect I just got a faulty box.

Wondering if I should unplug it?  It's no skin off my nose either way, but the data it is collecting is so off base, I can't see how it can possibly be of any use for the cause.  I know the data is bad, so it's almost irresponsible of me to let it feed junk data into the survey.  Right?

I'm thinking I will disconnect it and contact them to see if they want me to send it back.

My issue is that the box seems to keep killing my Orcon NF18ACV on a daily (or more) basis, requiring a reboot of the Orcon box. Unplugged the Samknows box for a week and no problems. Now just reconnected it so I will see what happens...

That's interesting - you're the second person I have heard from that believes the Samknows box is killing their router (and the seconf differnt type of router).. I'd be interested to know if you can reliably reproduce the problem - I am meeting with the Samknows tech people on Tuesday.

Nope, looks terrible, but there's not enough information provided to give anything but an unqualified reaction that may be 100% wrong.

to be clear, Neil is saying that doesn't give enough detail to say your connection is performing poorly and should have a fault raised.

Read back in this thread to see the many reasons why these results aren't really great measurements at this stage.

We just ask people to measure and report via https://breitbandmessung.de/ or https://www.wieistmeineip.de/speedtest/ (sorry, in german only) to get a quite reasonable overview. Simple. Sam doesn't need to know and Simon doesn't need to say anything.

Those are both normal speedtest sites by the looks of it.

no different to saying a user should test on speedtest.net or fast.com

often providers will direct users to use their custom url for speedtest.net just to ensure it's nothing on the serving network that's dodgy, There is no real gain to a provider doing things to the path to artifically increase speed.

What samknows is about is, being a third party toolset that shouldn't be influenced to provide an enriched detail about the connection.

Unfortunately sam still has a bit of work to do with both their own setup and providers to ensure the test data is quantive and valid.

Nope. The first one is from the governmental regulation authority. Depending of those official tests, you can cancel your contract/plan with the relevant ISP levered by those numbers. Quite different, isn't it? ;-)

That means people are held to account.....

Too black and white that to work here - how long has TrueNET been off and SAMMightKnows still flopping about "will be up soon". Mid Oct I think was the first promise I saw....

I have been paying for fiber MAX for 18 months +  and I never picked up I am getting less than 200Mb... That's me being the schmuck, but wonder how many sucker they catch like this.

95% of those "suckers" problems are due to issues with their computers or network. NOT the ISP network or the ISP provided router. It's probably higher than 95% but I couldn't confidently say 99% as I am aware of 2-3 instances where a Fibre Max problem has been traced to an ISP or LFC issue.

@Talkiet Not attempting to troll or anything (given my history with this) but has the peering been sorted to the testing servers in NZ from Spark yet? Could this be the reason for his results?

Reason I am saying this is because my SamKnows box averages 930Mbit on the NZ test. @ABPH011 you're also showing the combined test here which will average all the tests it does, please do the following:

If it is still looking crap then perhaps start up a new thread with your router model and all the information you can if you'd like somebody here to assist.

I'm unable to make a comment about when we might make improvements to various networks - those decisions are driven by a combination of many factors - cost, improvement to actual user experience, perception, as well as opportunity cost for other improvements.

That said, yes something's happening. No I am not going to give a timeframe. It might have something to do with the results APBH011 is seeing, but despite the vastly more professional approach taken to testing by Samknows than previous test companies in NZ, it's not a suitable set of metrics to use to try and determine if an individual connection is playing up. Samknows and and Comcom explicitly state that they will only report statistically significant results.

Cheers - N
