This gives a bit more detail on the feature. Doesn't address the question of whether it is similar or different testing to the scheduled tests.

Cool. Actually seems now that it's doing the tests to multiple locations, so the result includes tests to London, the US and Sydney (as well as national)

In the samknows.one portal for the ongoing tests you're able to split out the results - but it doesn't look like that for the instant test.

It seems the PDF document is a scan rather than the original text. Which is a pain since then you have to OCR it.

Our findings
7. Based on the information gathered during our investigation, we identified that:

7.1 2degrees used a computer script (or code) to identify customers on its network that were MBNZ volunteers;

7.2 Names, addresses, plans and other information about 14 identified volunteers obtained from the script were circulated internally between 2degrees staff;

7.3 2degrees then took some steps to try to enhance the performance of the 14 volunteers’ internet connections. Two volunteers were moved to better (faster) plans and were given bespoke discounts so there was no increase in cost for them. One volunteer was temporarily disconnected to prompt them to contact 2degrees and discuss their broadband connection.

Protecting the integrity of the MBNZ programme

8. We have removed the 14 volunteers that have been affected by these actions from the MBNZ programme, to ensure there is no impact on the results.1

Our expectations on 2degrees and all tested RSPs regarding future conduct

9. 2degrees has submitted a written commitment to the Commission that it has put an end to the investigated conduct, and that it has put appropriate processes in place to ensure this conduct won’t happen again.

Haha that is kind of hilarious....

To be fair though, are we expected to think that the RSP's wouldn't do everything they could to insure good tests? Obviously singling out individual connections is a bit far, but you would think they would insure links to the testing servers are the best they can be.

Also, do they only have 14 2degrees participants in total?! That's kind of a terrible sample size....

That's pretty poor. I wonder at what level this was authorized? I'm a big 2D fan, but less so now.

I shouldn't be surprised seems to be a common occurrence through a range of different industries. (eg Graphics Cards Speed testing, VW emissions spring right to mind).

Us humans like to look good it seems.

So when will isp comparisons be available?

Never? Quite possible.

There was a certain RSP who used to always exceed the plan speeds on the Truenet testing at one point - with the assumption being they were over dimensioning the plans for those users so they got better results.

Don't condone this in any way, clearly it's an attempt to game the system to a certain extent.

However, 2Degrees in this instance are simply unlucky they were caught out (or reported by someone) - you'd have to be naive to expect that other ISPs aren't doing this if they can somehow identify volunteers (which through various means is probably quite easy to do).

My opinion is that this is probably pretty common amongst ISPs and 2Degrees were simply caught out.

I wouldn't treat this as a reflection on them as an ISP - from all reports on here and amongst friends and family, they're really pretty good.

Disclaimer: not a 2Degrees customer.

This probe is showing how stupid this testing is...

Does samknows have you down as a "100/20" participant? If so, do they also know where Christchurch is, who Enable is, and the promo they gave entry level circuits.... It's going to think that a 100/20 connection is capable of 200% of what it's actually provisioned for!

Except a provider needs to opt in for the 200/20 upgrade, so it wouldnt be that unknown...

Negative.  It is because the testing methodology used by Truenet was completely flawed.

It is interesting that the code of conduct that specifically disallows such behaviour is only a few months old. Did 2degrees forget to tell their staff?

Do you mean that SamKnows can't get the connection data into the correct bucket because they have to be told which bucket is being used? Surely they will have consistency checks to pickup significant variations.
