What is most likely is the price of a 10GPON ONTs and the OLT optics is such that installing it now is roughly equivalent to putting in the current ONTs and 2.5G OLT optics, so it makes sense to put in the newer gear as then you won't need to touch it for literally years if ever again!

I would also guess that Chorus get a fairly good deal from Nokia on the gear since then Nokia can say "We've successfully deployed 10GPON in NZ and it has been a resounding success" as part of an international case study to talk with larger GPON installations in other parts of world. As we are only talking about new deployments vs the existing one which for a roll-out that is mostly part is complete. Chorus (and the other LFCs to a lesser degree) have shown that they can successfully handle a nationwide GPON deployment so them being able to deploy 10GPON with the associated 100GB uplinks. Also means that Nokia sell more 100GB backhaul gear too which considering the price of SFPs sounds pretty good.

While I could be having an incredibly pessimistic view on it all, but I am not sure.

Linux:Think of all the complaints of not getting 10Gb/s over Wi-Fi

End user stupidity doesn't make technology redundant.

I'm perfectly happy with my 802.11n setup. My Internet being faster is irrelevant for my use.

Im on 100/100 with BigPipe, at times Id love to have faster but for the majority of NZ, 100/100 would probably be overkill.

LOL!

I am only considering on jumping to Gigabit fibre now from 200/200.

Even if 10Gb/s service is offered on resi plans, we'd most likely to be stuck with using the ISP provided CPE rather than using third party router, since there is hardly any available that can handle 10Gbps, unless you are willing to shell out big$$$ for maybe an enterprise grade CPE.

Yup you called it. Cpe to do it is oh so expensive. Sure if you were able to do a mass market deal it could go real easy... But let's be honest, no provider is going to mass sell it anytime soon.

So it will be a specialty cpe, ont as cpe (so it's chorus's cpe costs).
Even if you were to provide your own cpe. Unless providers offer it over dhcp it's some serious horsepower required.

No kidding... Go price up a mikrotik that will do 10g over pppoe..

Does anyone know if Chorus will be offering 100G over GPON soon?

These are the only suitable models based on the requirements of 2x SFP+ and >= 10Gbps routing performance.

https://mikrotik.com/product/CCR1036-8G-2Splus

US$1,095

https://mikrotik.com/product/CCR1036-8G-2SplusEM

US$1,295

https://mikrotik.com/product/CCR1072-1G-8Splus

US$3,050

I don't see 10G being a residential thing because the capital investment is not justified for the small number of (GPON) users who will buy it. Commercial / Organisational 10G users can already get 10G services through BS4 / metro ethernet type services.

The next standard (assuming that 40 Gbps does catch a second wind) is 50 GPON. Demo gear is available from some vendors already but commercial quantities won’t be available for a couple of years. This speed is being driven by the 5G mobile community wanting to use it for backhaul. That is one reason why they dropped the 25 GPON proposal.

I don't think that's true at all. My neighbours are mostly with Spark or Vodafone and all but three have 100Mbs^-1 fibre connections. One is on 30Mbs^-1, one 1000Mbs^-1 (and uses wireless!), the other just has ADSL.

Most people are buying bundled services from companies they know, not the fastest service they can get.

950/450 clients are a difficult demographic for ISP's to cater to due to the amount of transit bandwidth required to cater to them. This is why users on low cost "Gbps"plans will typically find their "Gbps" connection is of no extra value for any traffic other than what can be reached via settlement free peering (Typically IX's).

Even this benefit does not apply for Spark clients due to them being the only major ISP in New Zealand who does not participate on any IX.

Maybe we could give away a lifetime Geekzone subscription to the first Geekzoner who gets 10Gbps install in their home. And of course a 10Gbps Geekzone badge :)

People from different walks of life and age groups I guess

myself, my associates and the neighborhood I live in which we all mostly live under similar circumstances, I don't think not having the fast internet connection available has even been a consideration.

For me the internet is a necessity these days, not a luxury and personally I don't mind paying an extra $5-10 a month if I never have to think or listen to a complaint about it, ever.

I haven't flatted since I was 18 but I could imagine it would be the same these days, no one wants to be fighting over bandwidth and id be surprised to find a flat that wasn't on the fast connection it could get these days either

Wrong. It's not bandwidth typically, it's latency / BDP and TCP CC algorithms and other client (or server) parameters, as well as actual clever network configuration in the access networks. But it's not bandwidth, unless you're with a tiny RSP that's unable to justify handovers of a reasonable size everywhere.

Cheers  N
