Un-metered is a great choice for a flat where you don't want to worry about tracking who used what. However if you are a gamer I would look setting up QoS (eg: TomatoUSB, DD-WRT, Gargoyle Router or pfsense) to ensure gaming and general web usage has priority over torrents/downloads etc.

The general feeling about Slingshot is that their un-metered plan is performing quite well currently, they have had a spotty track record but do have extensive caching. They do active traffic management though so don't expect downloads to be line rate in peak time. General web and gaming should be fine.

Compass's un-metered plan is relatively new and doesn't have a proven track record, might be worth a go but I simply haven't seen anyone post about performance on it... so it's a bit unknown.

Hi, do you know where I can get some basic guide to seting up QOS, I don't want something complex, just want a set so Browsing and VOIP is always given preference over anything else, just got my hands on a Gargoyle router but unable to figure out how to start with QOS.

Hi i am a customer with compass mammoth , After the first month it was great , after that it turned to poo , i get massive disconnections everyday , limited speed , artificial caps and THEE WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE.

i have to resolve to communicating to compass management through unconventional means in order to get a response ,

I would say that compass is one of the worst ISP's i have ever dealt with , even ISP's in third world countries are more efficient to deal with .

No i posted to inform the people that were asking questions in this thread regarding what the compass Mammoth service was like .

Do you have anything relevant to add to this thread ? or are you just being nonconstructive whinger and hypocrite , by whinging about my whinge ?

All i know pat , is compass is crap and wished i never signed up , not a slingshot fan boi either , just suggested that as its the only other unlimited alternative (I think).

The thing is there isn't one ISP which is head and shoulders above the rest. It all depends on a bunch of variables, in my opinion the biggest whether you can get the TelstraClear cable service or not.

I'm a TelstraClear customer (I don't work for them) and if you are in Wellington I would recommend the cable service if you can get it. It is fast and it works. It isn't the cheapest and it isn't 'unlimited' but you get what you pay for.

Also keep in mind not everybody on the board lives in Wellington, therefore a lot of people won't have experience of it so they are not making an accurate comparison. You will find people whining about TC customer service and of course the free T-Box they got, you won't find many whining about the actual cable service.

Keeping the bill straight may be a hassle but life isn't perfect.

Did you even bother to read the first page of this thread? If you did you would have noticed that I have added some hopefully relevant info. Proof them maybe that you are indeed just a whinger?

I use Snap Naked DSL. The basic $60 option will give you 10BG per month.

For $2 extra per month you get the "all you can eat" google/youtube addon.

Indeed i did , did you ? I also manage to read the thread title ? the part where it says unlimited Broadband? I have no idea why you're trying to rep a Snap plan for $60 dollars with 10 gigs ? its clear that you missed the bus on that one. Great you added something useful on page 1 , but its you're second comment and you're novice attempt to trolling/failing , that me and others deemed nonconstructive.

I imagine its pretty hard to envision if you aren't a customer of compass , but if you have a problem , then you have to ring them up , and then a customer Representative will ring you back from india the next day if youre lucky usually , or if you have a problem on a thursday/Friday expect to be rung back on the monday.

From my personal Experience dealing with Telecom Fiji and Vodafone Fiji , at least the tech support you get is on the same day , not from a office in India a couple of days later.

I dont need a benefit of the doubt or to justifie myself to you or anyone else , i hope that the information of my experiences will deter people from making the same mistake i did when choosing a ISP.

A friend of mine looked at Compass plan - one thing that you need to know about - you do not get a real world ip address - from their T&C

"Applications or services that require a real world IP address will not be supported on Compass unlimited data plans."

and when he ask about game that he "hosts" to play - 1 week later the helpdesk replied with

"Under the Mammoth plan you will not be able to act as a host due to the limit imposed for real world IP. This includes any services that require hosting functionality such as remote desktop, FTP, IIS and gaming software that function as a host server.

You will still be able to connect to other hosts but won't be able to act as a host yourself."

if you planning to do this or use services like 2talk for your voip phone, this plan not for you.

I also have to agree that compass customer service is very bad from my experience with compass wireless

for the Mammoth plan I can not help you - the no real world ip address ment it was a no go for him - he ended up going with a large cap with another isp and finger cross that the flatmates can keep in it.

Compass wireless - when it was going, we alway had full speed that our plan said for speed, no evening slow down etc, but when ever there was an issue, the voip was down and had to call on cell phone, and 0800 number did not accecpt cell phone, so was on my mins with normal 1 - 2 hour queue to get a person( no joke - i would check the call timer on my cell phone), who was more a call logger then a helpdesk person with no idea on what the issue is or when it will be fixed, or when someone that does know will let us know - most of the time you knew it was fix because you had internet back - i think they have just changed it so cell phones can dial the 0800 number now, and got a new customer service manager to fix these issue, but I have just change ISP, but not seen much improvement the last 2 month tring to sort the closing of the account down - lots of phoning on my part (with 5 - 10 min queue because there was no issues making 1+ hours) to get info on what happening - which reminds me - new month, need to chase them again.
