I'm looking to change broadband providers and want to move to an unlimited plan, preferably one that is naked (e.g. no landline phone) - Trouble is, everywhere I look, I keep seeing mixed reports about those that offer unlimited broadband, so I thought I'd check on here...

If you're on an unlimited plan, how do you rate it? Is it throttled for VoiP, P2P or any other service you use, how does it cope with peak time congestion?

what are the positives and negatives?

Most importantly, who is your provider and what are you paying a month

obviously slingshot have one but it is heavily throttled. They have large data caped plans though that eliminate the need for unlimited, in my mind.

You haven't said how much you're willing to pay.

If you're wanting to spend the bare minimum Slingshot is your only real choice.

If you're wanting a decent connection and happy to pay $200 - $400 per month there are plenty of options out there.

We're about to move into our first flat (five people) and are currently searching for the best deal for broadband that provides us with constant solid speeds for copious amounts of online gaming, downloading, youtubing etc. general internet things.

What is Compass and their mammoth naked plan like? and what are our other alternatives?

EDIT: In Mount Cook, Wellington

Good point - I am looking at around $70 per month. I have heard bad things about slingshot so are keen to look at others first...

I use Snap Naked DSL. The basic $60 option will give you 10BG per month.

For $2 extra per month you get the "all you can eat" google/youtube addon.

I have been using Snap for about 2years now and they have always provided excellent service

If you're only willing to spend $70 then whichever provider you chose expect to have throttled downloads on every protocol

Only their unlimited service is throttled.

For me atleast being on their 50gb capped plan i actually get decent speeds and i hardly ever even think about it, it just works.

The other day i managed to get 22Mbps out of it while going on a downloading spree to use up the rest of my cap before the end of the month :P

I have been on Slingshot Unlimited for over 2 months now, there was a slight hiccup recently which was fixed promptly. As far as speeds are concerned I can downloads at 1.5-1.8Mb/s during peak times from international websites and upto 2.3Mb/s early mornings and late nights. These figures are from downloading Internet Explorer 8 from microsoft website. Youtube full HD videos play smooth. Speedtest.net results show 16-17Mb/s during peak times and around 20Mb/s early morning and late night.
VOIP works fine too though I don't use it much. Only skype but not that often.
Happy to do more tests and provide more specific details if someone wants to know.
Overall I am quite happy with the plan.
