Just found this Press Release: Rural Connectivity Group Awarded Chatham Islands Contract – Rural Connectivity Group (thercg.co.nz)

The TL:DR is they are building 5 4G towers there that will be on Satellite backhaul.

Guess then it comes down to choice with how much a user wants to spend on a RCG connection or Starlink.

Watching starlink.sx it doesn't look like the Satellites need to talk to each over to reach the Chathams, the Hinds uplink site appears to reach satellites flying over the islands.

Picking a random Chatham Island address on starlink.com:

"Waitangi Wharf Owenga Road, Chatham Islands Territory 8016, New Zealand
Starlink is targeting coverage in your area in 2022"

By my calculations, the Chatham Islands RCG project is about $40k per household.

True, but the value for money increases since they'll now all be able to have mobile coverage and can use for an emergency - people heading over from the mainland too

Gurezaemon:

If I were somewhere like the Chatham Islands or Great Barrier, I would be peeing myself with excitement at the prospect of vaguely fast, reasonably priced internet. Even equivalent to low-end fibre would be great.

Out of curiosity, I wonder if there are any GZers out there?

One doesn't need to be on the islands to be "peeing myself with excitement". Rural Auckland will do it. Especially when the SH16 fibre is only 1200m away, but a railway line and river get in the way of an affordable fibre install.

Howdy neighbour!

Likewise, can't wait. And you don't need a railway line or river to get in the way to make a fibre install unaffordable.

Move to New Zealand's best fibre broadband service (affiliate link). Note that to use Quic Broadband you must be comfortable with configuring your own router.

Note the opinion expressed in the video are the creator's, not mine. So please don't flame me.

I think StarLink could be an alternative for New Zealand's rural community, and could save maritime lives.

There is so much that is wrong with this video.  I think if the creator managed to see past his anti-Elon bias he would have found answers for 90% of his criticisms (see the blatantly false space junk accusations).

Don't get me wrong, I'm no Musk fanboy, but for so many people - even if the service was 1/10th of what is promised, it would be so much better than the current options available.

Rural Telco's need a good kick!  Maybe this will be it.

Side note, remember google loon. Internet from balloon. Officially scrapped in march.

Basically this sort of tech made it unviable. Global internet coverage went up 40% since it's inception and testing

I'm not an Elon fanboy either but have found Starlink great. Doing about 1.5 TB a month over it. Can have multiple HD streams going during peak which was impossible before. The small outages have been reducing greatly and is now a fantastic connection. Internet is almost now something I don't have to worry about and kids are very happy.

It is incredible technology from the reusable Falcon 9 which has made launching the satellites so much cheaper to the active phased array dishes.

Great to hear. What kind of speeds/latency are you experiencing? And much variability?

I have a Samknows box monitoring the Starlink connection, the stats for that to n1-auckland-nz.samknows.com are:

Generally a mean of 80-160 Mbps download speeds each day:

Latency is ~100ms and is fairly stable. The bulk of the latency is due to traffic exiting the Starlink internal network at the Sydney POP, so destinations in Sydney have lower latency than destinations in NZ.

Elon posted a tweet that are aiming for < 20 ms latency, and if want to achieve that for us Kiwis is really going to have to have a local POP.

Looking good. Sure they will introduce an NZ POP in time, and they are working on other latency improvements. I see from the Reddit thread US users reporting that in most cases downtime (other than obstruction induced) has dropped to be insignificant or completely gone, which is great progress.

We just got the "Your Order is Ready" email πŸ˜€

Hopefully many others in NZ have too.  We are in the South Island, slightly north of Wellington.
