DumKopf: Pretty sad sight. My brothers new Snap! installation.

Figure it's internal wiring, might have to get a technician out.

29dB attenuation? Ouch! That's why the speeds are so low.

I'm not sure the house wiring will be the issue. The standard VDSL install process should include a line filter (installed where the phone line enters the house) and fresh CAT-6 wiring to the RJ-45 jack point. If the existing wiring was used and your brother didn't explicitly say to do this, the installer should come out again and do the job properly. He should be able to arrange this through Snap.

The thing is that he didn't have an installer. He went from Xnet ADSL to VDSL2 without someone coming to the property which I thought was pretty weird!

He signed up online, no one called him, just sent out the Fritz!box on the courier. Then his Internet stopped working 2 days later and he rang Snap! to see if they could help, which they did by enabling his account.

I think he's skipped the whole set up process some how.

Something certainly does sound wrong here. If he didn't explicitly turn down the in-house wiring, it definitely should have been done. It's possible that the installer is one of the lazy few who takes shortcuts.

It sounds like he needs to call Snap and try to figure out why an installer didn't come to the house. Unless he screwed up somehow, he should be able to get the problem sorted for free.

How close is he to the nearest exchange/cabinet? Is he actually in the VDSL area according to Chorus' map (https://www.chorus.co.nz/network-upgrade-map)?

That website says:

NETWORK CAPABILITY
Broadband > 20 Mbps (with the right modem and plan)
Broadband > 10 Mbps
NETWORK UPGRADE SCHEDULED
UFB fibre up to 200 Mbps by Dec-2015

Hello! Just got a new VDSL install done, new house, new wiring. Physically I'm about 100 meters walking distance from the ISLAM. Unfortunately, I'm on Vodafone's Huawei HG659 (the one that says I have 0 attenuation and no interleaving), and the stats from SSH aren't very clear to me although they also say 0 for attenuation values.

It's literally been on less than 24 hours, connection started at 30000 or 34000 down 10000 up and has been switched up to 38500/10000 since then.

Any tips for figuring out attenuation or likely attainable rates with the broken-ass HG659 firmware stats? I've actually got another Huawei VDSL modem here that apparently DOES show the attenuation values (according to posts I've read) but I'm kinda hesitant to reboot/swap modems/anything that might reduce our perceived stability.

I'll include what I can gather in a pastebin since I don't want to wall of text if I can avoid it - http://pastebin.com/bekuXRVt

Check after 10 days.
Don't mess with the modem...
Good things take time. I think i started around the 40Mbps before ending up around 54Mbps

@nzgeek

No point waiting for 10 days. The line attenuation is very high unless your place is very far from the cabinet.

I had similar problem and it turned out the Chorus engineer put my ADSL and VDSL on the same cable (I have two connections and two cables from cabinet):

Line attenuation was D25U42 and DSL sync was 3M/5M.

After ADSL and VDSL were separated to two different CAT5 cables:

Line attenuation is D12U20 and sync 40M/10M

This kind of problem is not going to go away on its own.

Had a power cut here this morning at 6am, but because we have an UPS our connection was still active. so i decided to restart the device to see what i could get sync rate wise.

resynced at 69/10 with a SNR of 2.6. will be interesting to see how long this lasts.

How did you get the SNR down to 2.6 on a Broadcom modem? What are the commands? :o

modem says 17a, it was 17a at 49/10 as well.

the technicolour doesnt tell you the profile, but im now using a netcomm, its also showing the attenuation as being 2.3dB higher than the technicolour.

there was zero difference in sync speeds when i changed modems.

Likely the two modems just read the attenuation differently or theres a bug in it.

for a line with a fair bit of cross talk, not bad 17a sync :)
