Wireless will give mixed performance.

over 150mbit N i used to get 55/10 however that would have periods of plummeting do sub 10mbit. Thats an example of Best world vs average performance

Wireless isnt an assured speed, You should never expect line speed straight off.

*im not sure why i didnt see it straight away tbh.

I can get over 100mbit on 20mhz wifi n which is a max of 150mbit

its just depends on the device

i would expect ~20mbit on an older device with on older modem.

what modem do you have?

*im not sure why i didnt see it straight away tbh.

because we just assume that people posting in this thread know to speedtest over Ethernet?

i always speedtest over wifi, but thats because i know at home and uni i can max out the physical connection before i max out the wifi link.

I heard the Chorus, is changing to the 998 Band plan this year, how will that effect my speed, are they do away the the DLM 1 where is talking about.

it is my understanding that they are, and from what ive read it may make it more symmetrical so potentially higher upload speeds, and also potentially higher download speeds. I also think it increases the range for VDSL. i dont know for sure though.

I dont think it changes DLM though, it might do but i guess we have to wait and find out.

i always speedtest over wifi, but thats because i know at home and uni i can max out the physical connection before i max out the wifi link.

I've tried a couple of adapters my card on my pc and a usb plug-in one.

the card is an asus pce-n15 11n pci-e, connects @ 300Mbps to the network, this has given the best speeds so far - 22-23Mbps on speedtest.net
the usb is a pos 11g older one. not so hot.
router is slingshot vanilla supply

like i said it all depends on the modem and the devices. i used to only get about what your getting with the spark supplied modem. upgraded to a netcomm NF8AC and got better speed from everything, phone wont go more than about 40 but all my laptops and Ipad will max it out at 65ish (when my line was that good).

i wouldnt worry about it too much though

well, i must say it is a nice change to see 4MB/s on downloads @ 23Mbps, but i am still lusting after the full 43Mbps via wifi of course :P

in regards to beefing up the router, will that guarantee (bad word im assuming...) better speed etc? im assuming moving to AC from N should have a decent improvement on throughput?

i had a brief look at vdsl AC routers and they all seem to be pretty pricey - so much more than standard. anyone have any recommendations here?

i guess its a bit of a gamble rolling a couple/few hundy on something that may or may not even be worth it. and its not like i cant live on 23Mbps - but the need for speeeeeeeeed etc

pointers/experience/advice welcome!

i get full speed on wifi N on my devices, on a 65mbit advertised connected wifi n network you should be able to get about 40mbps actual throughput. but like i said it depends on the device and the modem.

i got it with my laptop connected at only 65mbps, and of course the faster you can connect theoretically the faster the data will transmit. but there are heaps of things that influence what speed you actually see.

going to AC isnt going to change things when you can get better speed from a dual band wifi n modem. you also need to make sure all your devices are capiable of the faster speeds, some are not.

i wish there were more offical details out really..

theres no date set in stone AFAIK and looking into 998 vs 997 online actually brings conflicting arguments to those that have been made here (although there are minor differences again within the options for 998 etc which is also not clear which we are moving to)

Simply put, hold back and await the changes.

Chorus wont be doing away with DLM im sure, There are actually adsl lines out there on DLM trial too, so i would not be surprised if we see DLM hit for everything at some point...

my recommendation, Get a sound Router that has decent Wireless, Bridge a vdsl modem to it and leave all the work up to your router.

Among other improvements, this allows you to reboot your router without dropping your DSL sync, thus less chance of accidentally making DLM b!tch and moan...

On the weekend, switched from a 7390 to a 7490 on my Snap VDSL connection (ikanos cabinet), download sync speed dropped from 51mbit (dsl sync uptime 70+ days) down to 44mbit

when i first got VDSL here, i was on 17a within a day, was closer to 60mbit download sync back then

Will give it a week and see what happens, otherwise will be going back to the 7390, unless anyone has any suggestions

Fritz is connected with a 0.3M network cable direct into splitter at demark, house phone wiring disconnected completely

the 7490 has a different chipset in it, which does seem to preform lower stats on both Ikanos linecards and broadcoms on lines i have seen

It's also going to allow longer lines for vdsl. And chorus don't seem to want to implement annex-m, and 1 megabit really isn't suitable these days for upload with multiple users.

Yes thats all said and such, but if you read into the details you see quite the opposite in the reports, thus the confusion.
