I'll chat with the guys that create and manage this documentation, it could be the simple case of a link being provided to the wrong document. As mentioned, I don't see why the info I provided here couldn't be in customer facing docs, so perhaps it is... Somewhere ;)
I look after the access network, so I know what the equipment needs, but I don't intimately know the guideline docs that Chorus have published for end users.

Bit of an Update...
I've been informed that the Communication Cabling document is being updated at the moment.

I'm going to get my mitts on it and ensure it has any and all ONT information that we can provide - from environmental requirements to mounting options, etc.

It seems a lot of confusion has been caused by the outdated information in that document, so I'll try and get this to happen quickly.

Will update back here when I have more info.

Since you are doing a new build, it is encouraged for you to install a Star Wiring topology in the premise.
The benefit is to have the ONT and RGW installed in the Star Wiring Box and be able to connect the ONT port to any part of the premise through the patch panel.

Agree that you are free to install the ONT at any location in the house, but the limitation will be, you are only able to connect to the ONT at that location. If you want to get connection to the ONT at any other room, you may not have the flexibility of just changing a connection on the patch panel.

The ONT does have temperature and environmental requirements and should not be installed in enclosed areas without proper ventilation. There is a recommended minimum requirement for a Star Wiring Box available on the Telecommunications Carrier Forum (TCF) website.

Hi David, most ISPs do not want or let you connect directly to the ONT except via a NAT router.

And the answer for me then is to patch anything else from the ONT back to the patch panel first. I will run another couple of cables from the star wiring box back to the patch panel, just in case the ONT requires any more cable runs in the future. Then it will have three runs of cat 6 available.

Just as long as it's not needed by this Thursday as that ain't going to happen - I was out there last night at 10pm ramming in a post for a temporary mail box so we have somewhere for our mail to be redirected to :)

As to David's other comments regarding mounting I am certain that the ONT is going to get much hotter now that it is enclosed in a 'star wiring' box. Of course being the only thing in there should help with the air circulation!

If you want to have internet connection to multiple rooms and wireless does not have the range, you might want to consider installing the RGW in the Star Wiring Box as well so you can connect to multiple rooms from the RGW.
If you want SKY TV to multiple rooms, you might put the STB there as well.

What you present in the Star Wiring Box depends on what you plan to connect. Your cabling may include Cat6, RG6, HDMI, etc...

What you say in general does sound like a good idea but as I've outlined it doesn't make sense to put any of that in the start wiring box I was forced to install.

One comment - I don't know how you could patch HDMI through there. Normally it causes enough trouble just running it point-to-point!

This thread has got me a bit grumpy. I'm fairly sure you've been made to do something that is totally unnecessary.

First, you've been pointed to a Code of Practice. These documents outline a way that will comply with the requirements, but it is NOT the only way of doing things.

Second, the document says the star panel will "ideally" be located above the the ETP. It doesn't even try to suggest that is the only option.

If this had happened to me, I'd be trying to make the contractor to undo everything he specified at his cost (including paying for the unnecessary panel), and install it as I originally wanted it.

I believe the contractor has acted unprofessionally and should be held to account.
