Exchange limitation. There is no fault.
JohnR isnt meaning its an ISP issue, just explained it a little misleading.

According to statistics New Zealand there were a little over 3000 usual residents in Kirwee in 2006. It has grown substantially since then post earthquakes.

I am confused by a couple of the posts. In one post so done says it is an exchange problem and not an ISP problem and then JohnR says it is an ISP problem.

Can someone clarify.

To infer this has anything to do with Chorus being a monopoly (which it isn't) is just plain silly.

Have you get written to MBIE and the Commerce Commission saying you're unhappy with the level of service of their regulated broadband offering? The level of service you're getting exceeds the legal requirement significantly which is to deliver an average of 32kbps over a 15 min average. If you're unhappy with the level of performance (despite it exceeding the minimum service requirements significantly) the people who are responsible for people need to be told that you are unhappy with the level of performance.

I'd hate to think how many hundred people I've told to do this in recent years, and I've yet to see a single person post a response on here from the MBIE or Commerce Commission, which suggests people aren't actually bothering to complain to the regulator that is responsible for setting our broadband policy.

I'm sure I'll wind you up the wrong way by saying this as I do everybody when I post this, but the (harsh but true) reality is that rural people need to pay more for their broadband and the Commerce Commission should be legally allowing Chorus and ISPs to offer differentiated services on UBA infrastructure which is incapable of delivering the same service levels as a fibre fed ISAM.

The simple reality is a performance hit such as what you're seeing could be (and very likely is) easily caused by literally a handful of people who have decided to move to flat rate plans and download the entire internet. Chorus or ISPs have no ability to do anything to prevent something such as this occurring.

I have no issue paying more. The challenge is the cost for an 80gb DSL plan costs $55 however 75gb RBI wireless will set you pack $150 / month. This does not seem comparable or fair to rural users. Kirwee is hardly rural in terms of the location or township.

Chorus does have a monopoly on copper broadband in rural areas.

The issue here however is nothing to do with a monopoly - it's to do with a sub par user experience which nobody on here will deny exists.

The fundamental problem however is that the service you're receiving significantly exceeds the requirements for the regulated wholesale broadband offering which are set by the Commerce Commission. There are no plans to upgrade exchanges such as yours because they meet these requirements, which is why it's essential that our regulators, along with many lobby groups in the past year who are doing their absolutely best at present to ensure that Chorus suffer financially with cuts to the UBA pricing are told of this.

If you're unhappy with the price of RBU wireless once again the MBIE and Commerce Commission need to be told, they're the ones who have funded the service and told people they'll pay similar prices to urban broadband.

Strange you use the work monopoly.

Why would an ISP roll out UCLL gear that will lose them money, If you ask me Chorus is silly enough to provide copper xDSL to rural users. RBI for the same price as an exchange covers more area.

I lodged a complaint with the commerce commission and have not had a response, not even an automated one. I may have to re lodge.

Chorus have said pay 75k and we can fix the problem. I'm in the process of attempting to source 75k through a number of sources but this will take time to sort.

To be honest, not sorted, not happy but still have hope. Where this is hope, there is a chance.

Thats $28 per resident. Thats easy to front up.
Setup a donation bank thingi and get the ball rolling?

I set my NIC to your average speed tonight and played counter strike GO while on Skype and team speak. Without an issue.

$75 000 is do-able (spread over an entire community as opposed to one person). For some areas it would cost in the hundreds of thousands to upgrade their local exchange/cabinet. At least you've been given an option.
