You may very well be right about Truenet having no influence on Spark's network investments, but as a consumer, how am I supposed to know? I'm not just going to take your word for it, due to your vested interest as an employee. In addition, you have a vested interest in weakening the position of Truenet and similar services, because in a world where govt funding for ISP monitoring lapsed due to lack of public interest, Spark's position as the incumbent would be strengthened. Interested consumers would have no actual data with which to counter Spark's marketing claims (for example, saying they had the fastest ISP network due to some internal study), likely leaving them unchallenged in the NZ techie world.

Please note that I'm not trying to ascribe any malice to your words at all - I honestly believe what you said is genuine. I'm just pointing out how your words are weakened by your personal interest in the subject.

I'm going to let my history and reputation speak for itself. I've always strived to be as accurate and as fair as possible and that extends to any claims I have made (or will make) about the performance of our or other networks and performance monitoring platforms.

Also, I wholeheartedly dispute your claim that we have a vested interest in weakening "Truenet and similar services" but I'd agree to a modified version where Spark would be VERY happy to have a reliable, well designed RSP monitoring regimen in place. I'm extremely confident in the performance of our network and someone that was able to create a test regimen to control for variables beyond our control (individual access issues) would have my/our support.

It's tough not being able to crow about what we have achieved in the last few years, but some of it is unique, or at least not done well by some RSPs in NZ, and we're not in the business of directly assisting our competitors to build better networks.

Unfortunately quite a lot of the ISP testing done to date has focused on synthetic measurements that don't reflect real world performance (and in some cases mask provable issues) and no, I can't give details - not because I don't want to, I desperately would love to - but because in some areas we enjoy a real world performance benefit over some other RSPs.

Having worked with @talkiet and over the years and highly regard him even though he is slightly above average. As an ex-Sparkler my view maybe somewhat biased but working in the inner circle knowing exactly what has gone down I added my on emphasis on the IF someone was able to create an accurate testing regimen then I am sure Spark would have no issue with it.

Spark is a business so while working there I took the "win some / loose some" view. There was a high focus on delivering the best quality uncongested network. And can say with some authority at the time that was true, and always has been true for many years. Other than the non-peering policy which I personally disagreed with from a technical point of view I can understand the business decision to not peer at the NZ based IXs as they only cost the business money (those 10GB links aren't free, and someone has to keep an eye on them and support them when things invariably go wrong) the rest of the network was architected above and beyond to give customers the best experience.

The issue is Truenet for various reasons wasn't able or interested in actually reporting accurate information. When those fundamental issues were pointed out to Truenet they were dismissed as unimportant.

So perhaps a better question to ask is: Would it be better to report on inaccurate data that customers then base their decisions on which ISP to go with or have no inaccurate data and let customers base their decisions on other factors such as support etc. To me the most telling part about Spark above and beyond other ISPs is the number of posts on Geekzone. Spark have approximately half of the market, so you would assume that they get half of the posts on here. Which isn't the case at all. So go figure eh?

Since the many examples I have about dodgy Truenet reporting were learnt while I was employed by Spark I would prefer not post about them.

Geekzone is very lucky to have both @talkiet and @cbrpilot as they are core engineers working in the broadband space. They are two guys who I highly rate to keep things going into the future.

Chuckle. I give it a week of Pete troubleshooting it for them, giving them a method to fix it, and pestering them every day before they decide they need to fix it.

ctucks: Except I do notice a difference? I appreciate a lot of people that message because they don’t waltz in and immediately act like they own the place. I’m asking a question, and looking for constructive messages. It seems like you didn’t even read my initial post.

I feel like you’re the kind of guy that will tell people there isn’t a difference between 60hz and 120hz. People want to get the best available service they can, and I personally want to minimise my latency as much as possible.

Anyways, thanks to the people trying to help. I’m not trying to bring in any toxicity here, but it seems that every time I make a post, someone has to jump on their high horse and lecture people.

I think I’m gonna stick with my initial idea and get Orcon Fibre.

Instead of replying to everyone who is wrong (yes wrong) here, I thought id just add my support to you.

20ms of latency is DEFINITELY noticeable on time sensitive applications, so a 50ms+ difference to LA can be quite a jump with some games. Yes 20ms doesn't usually ruin a game, but it can have a bigger impact than people here seem to realize, but a lot of this is dependent on the games coding as well as the players ability to perceive the difference. 75+ ms is extremely noticeable and definitely NOT just in the users head.

I don't want to detract from the thread, but in short, some of the responses I found very arrogant and rude, at the end of the day if you don't have some thing constructive to say (or don't know what you're talking about) please don't post.

Hopefully Orcon works out.
