I also dug my own trench for UFB, years ago (using a spade and a trowel). I obtained the 11 metres of required green Chorus conduit from several second hand building supplies companies.

If that was me while I had that trench open I would throw a spare duct in there for future use as well as a duct for the fiber, you might want to put electric gates out there or garden lighting one day.

Chorus wont supply the duct. They haven't for quite some time. Just go and grab it from your local Cory's. We used to pretty much always have 60-odd metres on board, these days the boys barely carry a length!

Nice trench! But yea, throw in some standard electrical conduit for a gate or whatever in the future while you're at it.

It'd be nice to show the contractors some respect. These guys are doing what they're contracted to do. Issues with the type (ie microduct etc) of installations they are doing are with Chorus not the contractors.

They are getting paid next to nothing so you get a crap installation. That is what the client (Chorus) has instructed so that's what you get.

Seeing the effort that you've has gone thorough and because I simply don't know what options I have (the house is ten years old and the previous owner probably didn't plan forward), I feel I should be using the time BEFORE Chorus come to do their initial inspection...

Are there any Auckland based companies (preferably, North West Auckland) that will inspect the existing cabling status and give me a price to remedy the situation?

In investigating just what I'm likely to get offered wrt a ufb install I came across this earlier gz thread

It seems to indicate that if your current copper connection is underground, then the fibre connection will be underground unless "not possible."

But what I'm taking from this thread is, they will underground it, but it won't be in a conduit?

Or does the referenced agreement between the government and Chorus not apply anymore?(Can't find it online)

it will be in a conduit, it will be in a ruggerdised microduct. it wont be in green PVC style pipe

Chorus arrived for UFB scoping... the usual options offered was to clip the duct to the fence or cut a groove in the concrete.

I don't want to use the fence as it is getting a bit tired and the rental neighbour has garden stuff up against the fence which will limit the life of the fence.

I don't want to cut a groove in the concrete as there is a substantial foundation beam under the automatic gate and the pillars of the side gate.

DIY thrusting a pipe under the 7m of concrete might be a bit hit and miss... stones and tree roots and I might miss or even damage the street fibre ducts.

Chorus have said they will not attach the duct to the concrete surface at the bottom of the fence. (yet to be confirmed on another visit).

So my current thinking is for me to run a 20mm galv pipe on the surface of the concrete between the gate and the grass. Photo shows a spare piece of pipe lying where I will fit a full length pipe.

Another issue is the fibre cable from the ETP to the ONT... 8m run under the wooden floor of my house. Can the cable sit on the ground?

However, I plan to push some 20mm rigid PVC electrical conduit under my house to reach the 8m and blow a draw string through.

Maybe I can leave the ETP-ONT cable inside the conduit and leave it all lying on the ground.

My two cents worth: I think your idea of running a galved steel pipe along the concrete, next to the fence is a good one. Should hardly be noticeable. You could put it on the inside of the round fence posts even.

The internal cable should be suspended off the ground, to avoid any moisture issues.

I would like to preface this with a reminder that this is a free install. Yes the government is providing a loan to cover some of the cost, but A) that needs to be paid back, and B) Chorus is using a substantial amount of our own capital to fund the rollout.

Shallow bury/clipping of Micro ducting is standard practice. It does reduce the cost of each individual installation, which allowed us to cover more of New Zealand. Yes having it in a telecommunications conduit would provide further protection. However the additional cost would not outweigh the benefit in reduced faults. We have far fewer issues with people damaging Fibres in their garden than people like to believe. (It’s usually some clout with a digger and no amount of additional conduit is going to protect from that).

With my ramble out the way, to the matter at hand!

I was under the impression our network services team (0800 463 896 – option 3) could still arrange to supply you with greenpipe (telecommunications conduit). Although it so rarely comes up that I could understand if they decided to stop doing so. Otherwise it can be purchased from electrical suppliers.

Most technicians are amiable to requests so long as it’s not going to cause issues in the long run. If you do run your own conduit, so long as there is some way for them to get the micro duct through (no sharp corners or leave a draw tape), then they will be happy to do so.

However each install is vastly different and there will always be exceptions. If anyone has questions they are welcome to send a PM with their address and I can get specific. ^Richard

My installers were going to do the same thing. The bathroom is on the outside wall, with an outlet (for a razor) between the sink and the toilet. It wasn't until I told them I had access to the crawlspace through the ceiling that they agreed to drop it from there. Even then they refused to run it inside the wall so it's clipped in the corner of the wall with a hole in my ceiling (which has a plastic bit so it doesn't look horrible). But I nearly told them where to shove it when they were unwilling to budge from installing it in my bathroom.

The only other place they were "willing" to put it (before I mentioned the access to the crawlspace), was above my main door in my apartment, since that ran into the hallway and they thought they could use the existing conduit which is hooked to the fire alarm. I wasn't too pleased but with the many many hassles I had getting it installed in the first place, I was pretty beaten down with the whole thing and didn't want to fight them. Sadly my wife and I are looking at getting our own place so I'll have to go through the entire thing again.

I'll run conduit myself if possible. The place we are currently looking at doesn't have fibre available yet but says it will "between July and November". We haven't decided if we are going to make an offer yet. If we do however I'll run everything I can myself after seeing the jobs a lot of installers around here do.

I just find it ironic on that news article there is a comment about people raising the install quality issue as "An agenda". It is not an agenda, It is a waste of my tax payers money and Chorus's

The real agenda is from Chorus to get it done hard and fast, throw everything under the rug them blame someone else when it all comes to light.
