I know some people who want a cheaper offering not a faster offering. Do you think there is a chance for a lower price fibre offering appearing in the future?

50/10 is already the low price offering, but increasing numbers of RSPs are not offering it, or have grandfathered it. Most see 100/20 as the entry level UFB product, especially if they offer fixed wireless as a lower tier.

Since I'm well aware Spark isn't a charity, I'm guessing they have decided that the cost of administering 'Basic' 30/10 plans separately from the 'Standard' 100/20 plans isn't worth the effort?

Do the Basic plans at 30/10 or 50/10 still exist?

Yes. Spark and Skinny offer 50/10 and 30/10. Depending where you are of course.

** FibreBASIC has a different speed depending on your Local Fibre Company. Addresses in Hamilton, Whanganui, New Plymouth, Tokoroa, Hawera, Cambridge, Te Awamutu, Tauranga and Christchurch will have a Fibre service with the ability to deliver speeds up to 30Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream. The rest of NZ will have a service able to deliver up to 50Mbps downstream and 10Mbps upstream. FibreBASIC not available in Kaipara and Whangarei.

Keyword is offer. You have to ask for it. Website will give you minimum 100/20.

I really hope Spark / Skinny and co do upgrades too. From memory the 30/10 plan was upgraded to have 50Mbit down free of charge but both providers (at-least currently) don't seem to be offering this to customers. I suspect this is to "upsell" customers to the 100Mbit plan.

It is great that Chorus are doing this and advertising it also.

My Mum was on a 30/10 and is now on a free upgrade to 50mbit, shes in her 70s and checks email and the news, 30/10 was fine but at no cost, hey well take it

It's designed to be simpler for the customer and push towards wireless for the lower speed band (which isn't the worst place for it, competes well there)

I’d make a joke about ISPs and their fixed wireless move off copper chorus vs offering fibre but I will refrain myself from getting into a spot of bother ;)

This will have me reconsidering options in the future. I used to be on 100/20, but the 20Mbps upload was the reason I went for the 950/500 option.

300/100 would be ideal, especially if the lower cost of 100/20 remains.

Yep. And roughly in last year the upload went from 20 to 100, all at no extra charge to what the 100/20 was.

Not all ISP’s were on board with it though, especially the two biggest ones from memory, and still the case today.

I had to change ISP’s to get the extra value Enable was offering.

I guess the answer then is if your ISP doesn't do the move free or low cost then you can change ISPs to one who does. To avoid losing customers most ISPs will probably offer the speed increase.

ISPs are a low margin business, so I suspect that they will use this as an excuse to apply a modest price bump.

I am tossing up moving from Spark to Sky. I pay for Disney+, and get Netflic through Spark.

I could get Sky installed (Basic), get their Gb plan with Dsney+ and pay about the same per month.

I don't really need or want Sky, but it would have been basically 'Free' and I would have got 900/400 internet. I also don't 'need' that.

If Spark upgrade my speed to 300/100, for the same price, I'll stay. The 100 up would be nice. I never saturate my 100 down.

Wait and see I guess.

It will be interesting to see what happens with business connections - at work we currently have 8 business (100/100) fibre connections through Vodafone. A bump in those would be pretty awesome.
