cws82us: the only why telstraclear is fast is they the? only isp that got cable inernet in new zealand so fair

I think to be statistically correct they would be discarding top and bottom results. Also TCL has its own backbone so "cable" wouldn't be the only variable anyway.

A real reminder re the data published yesterday, it was browsing only, which is not a speedtest like measure, the files are small and many, so rampup is in place for every part of the measure. The most likely drivers are going to be DNS, packetloss and latency.

If a probe is on a 1Mb/s service it may have the same result as a probe sitting on a 10Mb/s fibre, 20Mb/s DSL or a 15Mb/s cable service. It could potentially get a better service, depending on backhaul, DNS servers, congestion.

Even Mauricio's 100Mb/s cable service! :-)

We plan to publish some international comparisons next. Later we plan some throughput comparisons - then we will need to be careful about the technology comparisons.

Yes. I'm quite interested in the 100ms between Telecom and TelstraClear.

I'd like to see the traceroutes to trademe from Xtra customers.

I wonder if those are just 10ms slower because of ADSL latency, then would that be enough to impact the stats?

I noted there are 30 + files. None of the extra files will start loading until the index.html file has been downloaded, processed and the router starts to request the graphics, etc. So that's 30 times a 10ms latency difference... that would quickly give you the 100ms difference?

However I'd also like to know what it might say about hand over from TradeMe to each provider?

John, thanks for stepping in and answering the questions. Your web site (www.truenet.co.nz) has a lot of useful info that people can read up. I gladly support your project & wish many more others would too.

It would help if your reports state that this data comes from volunteers that have your HW on premises. This currently is not representative of the whole country. Most of your volunteers are in AKL from what I remember.

Can I say that this uses a D-Link DIR615 with custom software that runs your tests? As this seems to be a transparent proxy of sorts, the location between modem & router is not a problem. 100Mbps between router & modem very seldom will be the bottleneck. The user can configure that downloads are limited between 400MB and 5GB over a month.

Please keep this GZ community vibrant by contributing in a constructive & respectful manner.

Thank you for your comments they are correct apart from the distribution comment. Our probes are pretty well distributed now, with probes in all major urban areas, and about a third are in Auckland. We have stopped accepting volunteers in Wellington for the present because we have enough, but keep a record of new volunteers to enable replacements.

We are especially keen on adding more regional volunteers, especially from the South. Our earlier requests did result in good numbers from the south, so for some ISPs we are no longer growing the pool although again retaining volunteers details to provide replacements. New volunteers are choosing the bigger caps eg the 5MB/month cap, so we are able to do more interesting tests and hope to publish some details soon.

That depends how you have your modem and router connected, for DSL if you are using half bridge or pppoa to pppoe bridge I don't think you can put the Truenet between the modem and router.
