According to Truenet, TelstraClear ranked as the faster connection when downloading a dummy test web page, Vodafone the slowest.

Results are here.

The test results came out of 25,000 downloads over a range of different sensors across New Zealand.

I like how the 0.3 bar for Xtra (Telecom Retail I presume!) is apparently over twice as long as the 0.2 bar for Telstraclear.

Edit - just checked the results page and there's some pretty big leaps of faith there... I'd ask how Truenet is sure that the user doesn't have a download going at the same time as the test is being run.

So the test shows that Telstraclear cable (lots of Wellington customers) is fastest to the TrueNet website which is hosted on a Catalyst webserver connected via WIX in Wellington.

That's not news, it's physics.....

Splitting the results by region and type (cable, adsl) may actually be interesting, they should do that.

I'd still expect Wellington testers to Wellington web server to be fastest though

Would also be interesting to see some Vodafone and Xnet customers post their tracert's to www.truenet.co.nz

On Telstraclear it goes via tranzpeer to wix.

The high ranking of slingshot brings the results as a whole into question as far as Im concerned.

Looks like the location of handover points and peering polcies would be the key differentiation here, notwithstanding the top results of telstra/telecom and their peering policies

Not OPEN peeering but both Telecom and Telstraclear do interconnect at APE and WIX

Either way.. there is a domestic route from Telstraclear to Catalyst's server

So comments about Truenet's server location seem silly.

While TCL don't peer with WIX, they offer unmetered TM data to their customers. So one would speculate that they ensure good exchange

But there's just a stack of stuff we don't know about how these tests are done, so what do they really mean?

As they're all done the same way (one assumes) it does tell us some really interesting stuff... but what about?

First we need to resolve the url ... www.trademe.co.nz = what IP?

Who's DNS server are we using to do that? How far way is that dns server? How loaded is that DNS server?

I'm sure there are many good responses from TrueNet. Last time I talked to John I was very impressed with what they're doing.

How bit is the file?

How is the MTU set up for the connection?

Are all the Vodafone customers in one area and it just happens that DSLAM is congested? In which case is that Telecom's fault?

Are ISPs watching the traffic and giving it priority?

Are Telstra's customer using more local data, so Telstra has provisioned better local capacity?

Are Vodafone's customers using more international capacity so capacity to local content is just deprioritised?

How big is this web page anyway? Are TCP/HTTP ramp up issues impacting?

Telstra don't use local proxy as far as I'm aware, but does Vodafone?

Where is Snaps core (Christchurch?).

So in all... while very very cool... and an interesting snap shot... what is it telling us?

Is it telling us that Vodafone have done to the net what they did to mobile in Australia - over sold?
Is it telling us that TelstraClear is just focused on better net?

This is as meaningful as Telecom's "Look how fast our XT network is!" ads.

Dumb people will be suckered into thinking it means something.

Smart people realise there are so many uncontrolled variables it's, at best, an interesting discussion point.

@TelstraClear: Imagine how terrible these results would have been if it measured Intl traffic performance, with your Proxy cache in the way borking it all up. I bet they wouldn't have even included you in the results, rather some blurb reading "Multiple attempts to test this failed."

Audiophiles are such twits! They buy such pointless stuff: Gold plated cables, $2000 power cords. Idiots.
