This thread is just going around in circles.

1) Complain about speed.
2) no, don't want to pay for a fix.
3) get owned because internet is actually still functional.
4) wait 20
5) goto 1

@michaelmurfy
Wants does not equal needs in my current situation.  The modern internet is less than functional at the times when there is significant congestion as we and others in our situation have to endure.

So are you suggesting the Chorus changes did nothing?

It's a shame the Commerce Commission essentially block the increase from 75kbps  to 150kbps for BUBA dimensioning from going ahead (which was part of the proposed Chorus changes). This would have improved things a lot for some rural users.

quickymart:
NZtimbo: This has truly been a awesome response, both helpful and unhelpful.

When all said and done, we have ADSL1 technology in our exchange that is so old and does not serve a fit purpose for modern internet usage.  Schools are utilising their faster connections for more interactive contend and when the kids come home and want to do the same thing they can't or have a substantially more difficult time.  Businesses here are suffering due to poor upload speeds and sometimes evening speeds are slower than upload.

As we missed out on the previous Telecom ADSL2 role out and Chorus have altered their backhaul which I'm convinced has caused these congestion problems.  I think it's misguided that a township of 282 dwellings and 700 odd residents, School, Medical Centre, Shops, Cafes, Butcher, Pub, Petrol Station, Fire Station, PGG Wrightson and many home businesses should be left out of the UFB / RBI (DSL) upgrades, especially considering cabinets feed off our exchange are being upgraded as part of the RBI (DSL) service.

The idea behind the petition is to get govt to add Outram to the UFB / RBI (DSL) upgrades meaning we should/could have ADSL2/VDSL2 with a decent backhaul.  Then if Chorus were smart they would also promote the Boost HD and Boost VDSL services and get more money from the community, but until they do that or add that thought into their investment plans they won't see beyond their blinkers...

Thank you all for your comments, this has been a lively thread.
Tim

So, as I asked, has satellite been looked into? Or no?

Satellite more expensive than cell data.

I'm aware of that. But he was asking about broadband options available and I seem to recall asking that of him very early in the thread; it has since been established he's not interested in other options.

So yes time for an update.

As most of you know things haven't been good for me during 2014.  But time heals all, even divorce.  Moving out of our beloved Family Home was a massive kick in the guts.

While I have a higher sync rate here in "The Renter" (~8.1mbps with no hard wired filter) the Chorus BUBA ATM backhaul continues to suffer even more congestion, we are now at ~0.5mbps every evening all evening meaning the modern interwebz is barely usable by just one person.

This weekend me and my daughter move out of "The Renter" into a new (er 1948) house to call our own.  Somewhat regrettably it's not in Outram as its become clear houses are more desirable here and therefore more expensive for what they are and I don't want to rent.  We're moving to Mosgiel and most importantly I have Chorus coming on Monday to install fibre so we'll be able to enjoy roughly 200x what we currently endure for the same price.

Where does this leave my Petition and all 39 pages and some 584 comments.  With Outram in the greater Dunedin boundary there are contestable funds from Chorus as part of the gigatown initiative and the National Govt available when finally announced (or was it just a election promise).  I will call for voluntaries from the community to take the reigns and guide them with information I've gathered and ideas that have been pitched.  Hopefully we can get to a point, just like me with fibre in Mosgiel, there is no upgrade costs to families, a fund with the Outram Charitable Trust may be a great way forward.

I do not believe the community should manage a solution as just like me when the manager moves out what happens.  I still do not accept Outram, Kirwee or any other township should be left in a black spot suffering severely congested backhaul provided by a utility service provider that is hiding behind a seven year old clause they believe gives right to 32kbps broadband as acceptable with today's modern Internet.  The Commerce Commission have again failed, putting a higher price on copper will not lead to a better service, all that will allow is higher returns to shareholders and continuation of a substandard utility.  I cannot understand why when Outram was ranked as outside the UFB and RBI (DSL) upgrade areas cabinets under the same Wireless RBI area were upgraded instead of having those funds used elsewhere.

So while I drink my cup of tea I'll leave you with this to have a giggle over...
