Hello across the ditch!

Spirit Telco is related to a long chain of Australian companies using similar marketing techniques to those reported here, based out of Melbourne, Australia. As I'm new, I can't post links, but Google the "Time Telecom forum" on Whirlpool Forums, which has a full history.  Whirlpool is possibly the Australian equivalent of geekzone?

Have a read here

Seems these roosters have been in the game for a long time and very experienced at being dodgy. I suspect they may be around for a while.

this is the relevant information for NZ

A new Time Telecom related group has appeared, with near identical complaints of misleading marketing.

In May and June, two new telecom companies, NXT Telecom Ltd and Zen Telecom Pty Ltd were registered in New Zealand and Australia respectively. Both have Sanjay Bhayanias sole Director.

Zen Telecom trades under the names of XLN Telecom, Venus Telecom, Action Telecom, Alpha Talk, Telcokey and Telco Key (sic! both names, with and without the space are registered with TIO) in Australia. NXT Telecom trades under the name Spirit Telcoin NZ, which is registered to a related company, M8 Telco Holdings Ltd. Some in NZ have confused it with unrelated companies including Spirit Networks and Spirit Telecommunications.

The link to Time Telecom is that NXT Telecom had Sachin Rathi as a Director up until 18th October. Sachin is linked through his Directorship of Smart Business Telecom Pty Ltd with Narayan Rathi, and thence to Time Telecom . Sachin was also a common director with these other NZ companies: M8 Telco Holdings and Your Phone Account.

NXT Telecom Ltd is owned by Sudha and Sriranga Rathi of Gandhi Chowk, Yadguri (?Yadgir) Karnataka, India. The Australian company is owned by Sanjay Bhayani. That Bhayani is a current common Director between the Australian and NZ companies, when combined with the NZ company's Ceased Director (Sachin's) history is sufficient proof of a Time Telecom link. That Sachin shares the surname of the owners of the NZ company, lends weight to the possibility that there continues to be a connection between him and these businesses despite his exit as a Director from the NZ company a month ago.

There are already a large number of reports of the Zen Telecom and NXT Telecom group marketing themselves in a similar manner to the Time Telecom group and its predecessors (eg. Orion), including passing themselves off as Telstra or Telecom NZ. Some examples from Whirlpool and geekzone:

Action Telecom
Alphatalk
Venus Telecom
XLN Telecom
Spirit Telco passing off as Telecom NZ or Telecom Wholesale.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Just a FYI on this, there has been an internal comm's to our rep's about this issue and I hope everyone here is smart enough to respond to them in the appropriate way if they call.

If anyone has received a call or been slammed then please email slamming@telecom.co.nz with dates & times of the call and what you were told so the team can investigate it.  Also ring up 123 and speak with a CSR as they will be able to move your services back to how they should have been as Telecom takes a very dim view of customers being slammed as it's bad for the whole industry.

Call me old fashioned but you know this whole thing could be avoided if Telecom didn't outsource their reselling or get organisations to do something that Telecom themselves should be doing via their own sales team.

I have no idea how you came to this conclusion, I wonder even if you read the thread?

Yes I have read the thread and the problem starts the moment you open the door as to allow others to resell your services. The moment you open the door to resellers is the moment you allow every two bit conjob the ability to say "oh yeah, we also resell for Telecom!" and thus we have the train wreck that was pointed out on Whirlpool. This whole thing could have been avoided had Telecom and other businesses sold their products directly instead of this stupid idea that if you have multiple resellers then they all try and compete to get customers thus drive up adoption of said goods and services - its the idiocy of a few executives that comes down crashing and burning the moment when reality hits the road. How many times must these cons happen over and over again before the likes of Telecom realise that having third party vendors reselling their services is a dumb idea?

Even if Telecom didn't have resellers cob jobs could still claim it and gullible people would believe it.

Are you referring to Telecom Wholesale letting providers re-sell!?

Commerce Commission forced them to wholesale services a looooong time back, in fact that is how it all works now with even telecom selling chorus services post separation.

If there was no competition available by resellers of the products then NZ telecommunications would be in a very very dire state.

IMHO this shows a complete lack of understanding of how Wholesaling works, and why it came about.

Telecom was "encouraged" to start Wholesaling services years ago by the Commerce Commission. They had very little say in it (fairer to say "none".). There was no choice in the matter.
So, in a nutshell, Telecom didn't "open the door" - regulators kicked down the door and said "help yourself, fellas!".

That's the first point.

Secondly, Telecom Wholesale is now not even part of Telecom - what was the old "Telecom" Wholesale is now a division of Chorus.
So none of the revenue earnt by wholesaling products goes anywhere near Telecom.

Ah, but bashing Telecom is so much better than actually pointing fingers in the right direction ;)

And by the way, Yellow Page is not a Telecom company either.
