Hi folks,

I just had a cold call from a blocked number. The gentlemen had an Indian accent and claimed to be from the wholesale division of Telecom. I was waiting for him to tell me my computer had a virus however he had a different offer.

He offered to save me 30-40% off my phone calling rates and then proceeded to tell me about a $79 deal with unlimited national calling and $1 cell phone calls.

He got a bit bambozzled with the fact that I was on VOIP but before I politely refused his kind offer I asked his company name and he said he was from Spirit (he spelled it out for me).

Has anyone heard of them?

seems pretty random though. They aren't a wholesale division of telecom, although they probably buy Telecom wholesale inputs

Didn't seem like those guys. This guy was pretty adamant he was from Telecom wholesale. I imagine they use the Telecom wholesale tag fairly loosely.

Pretty dodgy methinks.

I've heard of similar situations before where a telco with little/no brand recognition tried to claim they are Telecom wholesale (or another well known NZ telco brand like Orcon or telstraclear).
If they get a complaint they can just say the customer misunderstood them when they said that they bought wholesale inputs.

They claim to be from the wholesale division of Spirit Telecom.

I checked it a number of times. I don't think they were claiming to be from Telecom at all.

They said that as I was a business they were offering me wholesale rates. 30 to 40% of what I am currently paying.... but they didn't seem to know what I'm currently paying.

Eventually they hung up on me.

Promote New Zealand - Get yourself a .kiwi.nz domain name!!!

Hmmm. Maybe he did say "Spirit Telecom wholesale". All I heard was "Telecom wholesale". His accent was pretty heavy. I had to get him to spell Spirit at the end of the conversation. Quite funny that they are calling 2talk customers. I guess it is all just random.

He definitely didn't know what I was paying. As per the old Slingshot cold callers these guys have no idea what VOIP users are paying and he guaranteed me several times in the conversation I was going to save 30 to 40%

Firstly, please confirm was it Telecom Wholesale or Spirit Telecom that you received a call from.
Spirit Telecom is an Australian based telecomms provider, they would hardly announce themselves as Telecom Wholesale and conversely it would be pretty improbable that Telecom would also call themselves Spirit. Why would they?

The next message in the thread was suggesting to look at the website of Spirit Networks. This is a New Zealand based company that is neither a reseller of Spirit Telecom or Telecom Wholesale services which would be pretty obvious from viewing the website! So whoever put that up as a suggestion should think before they hit the reply button. Go figure.

If contributors to this forum cant first do some intelligent research before making erroneous comments then we wouldnt have to have this discussion at all and no need to make a mountain out of a molehill.

Magnet. I think the first comment in your post was directed at me.

Firstly, I can see you are new here but your tone is a little inflammatory. Generally we all try to help each other out. There are a lot of contributors on GZ and generally in a situation like this someone else has experienced a similar call and can shed some light on the matter.

To answer your question, I have no idea who rang me which is the reason I posted here. The two things I do know is that the gentleman who did ring me had a heavy Indian accent and I do know that he portrayed himself as being from telecom wholesale. It wasn't until the end of the conversation that he gave me the name spirit. I had to get him to spell it as he was difficult to understand.

I wasn't trying to make any mountains out of mole hills, just interested in who actually called me.

These calls have nothing to do with the above NZ company (even if magnet is having a bad day).

I just had a call from them too - and I am on 2talk, came from a blocked number - said they would offer me massive discounts of my home phone.

They said they were a "Division of Telecom to help save it's customers some money" to me - I told them I worked for Telecom and they hung up straight after - seems like a new scam is on the prowl.

They didn't give a company name to me though - the phonecall was only about 1min long. I have a few 2talk lines so will see if they call again on another line.

Edit: Thought I might say that I am unlisted in the phonebook, the line they called on was a Nelson 2talk line.

In any case - regardless of whoever is calling - accepting "deals" over the phone is asking for trouble.

If you want a deal, do not sign anything a door knocker offers and do not every say "YES" on the phone - that could be your approval to transfer toll calls, landlines, ISP to some scammer.

Yes, I know there's a "cool down" period for things bought over the phone and from door salespeople, but I wouldn't trust it would be solved without a fight.
