75k 2ez, if the people want faster Internet they are going to have to pay to be upgraded or to move.

Esit: 3,486 people as of 2013 according to Selwyn Council, so about $25 each person

Mind you though, that won't translate into 3 486 people who are able to pay - some of that number will be children/babies with no income.

Personally, I'm still a bit surprised a town with a population that size hasn't been upgraded to (at least) VDSL. Outram and Kinloch, I can understand, but Kirwee, with that size population? Odd. What happened to the idea of all towns with 500+ lines being upgraded to VDSL capability? Surely this would fit into that category?

Has anyone considered compass wireless? There coverage seems to stop just short of kirwee, but in reality you maybe able to get it there, and their prices seem to be reasonable http://www.compass.net.nz/at-home/broadband/wireless-broadband.html . If the issue is really that it might be worth a try, I have never had this service so cant vouch for what it is like btw

Quicky, They generally have low upgrade costs so they just do it.
The little ones everyone thinks is waste generally are sitting on the regulated limit. Kirwee is quite usable still so not too bad on the "Congestometer"

Ideally RBI would have increased data caps beyond the current 30Gb, say 50gb or 80gb would be plenty (for me) and I'd jump to this. Once 4G is here (in rural Canterbury) later this year or early next then 30Gb will be gone in a matter of days....

On RBI at your place i would suggest 15-20Mb/s down and 5Mb/s up
Its like under $120 for 50GB so not bad..

Well, well, well....

This just in from Chorus:

If National is re-elected they have said there will be an “RBI 3”, and Kirwee is likely to be part of RBI 3. Within Chorus Kirwee is sitting within the top 10 areas to be upgraded, when/if budget is available.

Presume timelines for this are years and not months, but light at the end of a very long slow tunnel....perhaps....

The upgrade would require swapping out equipment at the exchange (ASAM for ISAM – ADSL1 to ADSL2) and installing a DWDM (dense wavelength division multiplexing – puts data from different sources together on a fibre). The estimated cost for this would be around $65k-$75k.
