Need to do a bit more reading on this, but being a Chorus product it's access plus a bit of national backhaul. The videos above discuss international file transfer etc and seem to imply that this new product will make a significant difference to performance for that kind of service? Is it up to the RSP to sort out the remainder of the link?

I think that this is awesome. Though, surely our international contention issues have been eased with the 'new' international fibre connection that finished earlier this year?

Nope.

Even in the IT world it's not cheap, Heavily depends on stack your connecting to etc.

if providers drop to IPoE rather than PPPoE it becomes reasonably possible with a cheap mikrotik or x86 router build.

Just found this (overpriced) offering from Asus that comes with a 2.5gig port: https://www.asus.com/nz/Networking/ROG-Rapture-GT-AX11000/

In terms of that router though. I can confirm, it's predecessor the GT-AC5300 is freaking ridiculous. and I loved it.

In terms of wifi range, I can honestly say there's been absolutely NOTHING that's even compared to it, that I've used. Quite easily walked down the road a not insignificant distance and still had strong signal.

Actually thinking of buying this new one.

Chorus are not offering any backhaul at the moment. Tail Extn is not available. Meaning the ISP needs a UFB handover in Queenstown to service those areas and a large backhaul pipe out of there.

There is a $400 upgrade fee per connection as well.

I guess we will see what the market does but I feel very few ISPs will offer this, I would expect the likes of MyRepublic and Trustpower to offer it for marketing and PR value.
However I doubt they will upgrade much if any of there backhaul network.

The cost to by domestic and international backhaul and transit is pretty expensive and prices are not moving down at a very fast rate.

Most people will not touch the sides of there 100Mb connection, let alone 1Gb. The few that actually are, are not the kind of customers any ISP actually wants, as there likely using more bandwidth than what the generate in profit.

What's Elon love? Oh yea, Hyper. Ok, write "Hyperfibre" on it and throw it. Now ring up RSM again, use a fake voice, and see if they'll give us some spectrum.

I was worried the 450Mbps "gigabit" service was a slippery slope to our internet plans becoming increasingly asymetrical. Nothing like a 4Gbps upload speed to emphatically reject that.

Especially as the ufb rollout won't be complete the until 2021 - clearly a marketing tactic

@BMarquis Disappointed you missed my hood in the early upgrades... I'm totally more important than @freitasm's hood.

Not that I really need any more than Gigabit anyway. But maybe it'll push me to upgrading my network to 10Gbit.

I will say I'm pretty satisfied with gigabit atm. I will upgrade once plans become a bit more reasonable which I'm sure wont happen till its been on the market for 2-3 years and the tech has matured a bit.

Hopefully we'll see pricing for the other synchronous plans start to trickle down.. be amazing to see 100/20 replaced with 100/100 or 200/200 as the standard entry level.
