Hi,

I've been following Starlink for ages, and signed up on 9th Feb too - for Haruru in Bay of Islands, unfortunately a bit outside of the fibre zone that's just been installed :-/

On Reddit, it seems users are now down to 37° North in the USA. Though still looking a bit patchy on https://satellitemap.space/

I'll be needing 35° South, so a while to go. My confirmation email says mid-to-late 2021, though that seemed pretty generic for everyone.

I see they successfully launched another lot today, pretty impressive going pity they lost the 1st stage booster this time around.

Was just out for a bit trying my luck to see them like the ones on Feb4. But these seemed to be more a E/W positioning rather than N/S that we could rotate in to

Back to back. 1855 local tomorrow is SL17 (out of order, 19 went up today)

Got a client with a hanger at Rangiora Airfield. Has a nice gaming PC setup with controllers and an ultrawide screen for playing Flight sim 2020.

Yesterday the game attempted to update and deleted itself completely so today he's re-downloading the 150 odd GB of data required to play it - Slow and expensive on his Rural broadband connection with a 120GB monthly cap.

Unfortunately there is no fibre and no plan for fibre - None of the Wireless providers over coverage there due to Poplars etc so this could be a game changer.

I suggested he puts it into his hanger and put an AP on the roof and have the neighbours chip in to use it as they're lighter users that it would just make it easier for tablets and phones for flight planning etc.

He's already spend a fair bit of money getting a directional antenna installed on the roof so to pay $500 bucks for the gear when its going to blow his current options out of the water is no big thing at all.

I hope he does order it so he can be a guinea pig for me to see how it goes for other clients and might also remove my number one requirement ("Must have fibre") when we sell up and move in 2 or 3 years.

Its a "Microsoft Store" purchase he made so not really.

The "Game" is only 1.5GB which I left him downloading. Then on the first run it downloads all of the map data, satellite images, buildings etc which is the big download.

I suggested he just take the box home and plug it into his home PC monitor etc as he has Fibre there. Otherwise it was going to take over 24 hours probably at the speeds he gets ignoring the cost for over usage of the 4G.

He sounded like he was going to do that but he might have just decided to be lazy, wait and pay the bill.

Latest patch is 23GB then another 5GB or so for the update from the marketplace (If he's not done the Japan and US they are circa 7 or so each from memory).

So yeah do it at home on Fibre for sure...

its also in beta so they don't have as whole heap of satellites up yet. i would say its just temporary.

Plus somebody has performed some revenue projections on Starlink based on their filings etc.

Here they assume overscribing 3:1 which might make sense except possibly in the evenings when everybody is watching streaming TV.

Their conclusions are it's hard to see how they could generate 30 billion in revenue.

5G is also a strong competitor.
