pjays: Interesting. Install sounds diabolical, but presumably that's just an issue with Vodafone rather than anything inherent to RBI itself.

Initial figure indicated decent speed but the your FTP transfer seemed very slow?

that's actually still over the 45 kilobit cir .. so maybe they'll come back saying performance is acceptable.

Yes it goes through to auckland first.

I'd like to be able to comment further on the speeds but on Saturday the tower that I was connected too underwent a major upgrade to its aerials and cabinetry. I'm still connected via another tower but the signal is -115db and it doesnt officially register any signal strength. I've been told they wont normally install below -90db

Hopefully "my" tower will be brought back online again soon and I can see some signs of improvement. Until then......

Very curious as to what 'Your tower' is. Supposedly there is some work at Rolleston but I was under the impression that was completed.

So you are saying that now there is some work being done on your tower you have no access as you are picking up a signal from a different tower.... Hence the very low signal strength?

Hi pjays.

I know how diabolical it can be with this kind of backhaul congestion and the waiting for some hopeful improvement (its not technically "broken" so not really a fix).

I noticed that your modem stats say interleaving is "fast" with a few non-recoverable CRC errors. On any line with a distance issue I would recommend you to ask the provider for interleaving to be turned ON. This may improve your throughput slightly since the interleaved profile also has different queue settings, but having fewer lost packets will help much more. Get that sorted for starters.

Second suggestion is to put that master splitter in yourself or have a quiet word to someone who can do it for you. One of the chorus techs might be willing to do it for a bit of cash and some beers... or someone on geekzone might be willing to have a go. The splitter is crimped into the telecom side of the line where it comes into the house and has wires that go out to the phone outlets and another pair direct to a dedicated ADSL outlet. When that Alcatel ASAM is finally upgraded to something with a fatter backhaul pipe, would be nice if you could get a wee bit faster than 2.4Mbps but no guarantees.

ADSL2+ is not much different from ADSL, except that equipment is newer so not restricted to such a limited shared bandwidth. For example, 8Mbps / 161 = 0.49Mbps and that would be your maximum at congested times of day, and then you probably have lost packets to slow you down even further as a result of the congestion. The ADSL2+ gear (Alcatel ISAM) might have 2000Mbps or more backhaul to share around, so not so much of a restriction (yet) but will eventually become as dated as the ADSL1 gear is now. ADSL2+ will not help much where distance is an issue, since it attenuates down to ADSL speeds anyway, however your ISP can request a long reach profile that trades some of your upstream speed for downstream. ADSL2 and ADSL2+ also have a function that slows down the sync rate if your line gets a bit noisy without having to re-sync, so this contributes to more stable noise margin with less crosstalk where there is lots of broadband users in the same street.

Still the only thing that helps on a 4km ADSL line is better wiring, or switching to wireless. You might be able to sort out a wireless link to someone that has better speed, and pay for your own dedicated ADSL line at their place.

Time to find a new industry!

Thanks for the response. I have gone with Wireless in the end (not RBI) - want with Compass as we can see their transmitter on Sugarloaf (just). Been good except for an issue with the wireless router dropping out continually - I think something to so with the PPPoE setup in it perhaps - I have posted on the Compass forums about that.
