Behodar: Did anyone see this? Telecom wants to offer 1000/500 nationwide.

I dont think telecom understand what hitting 100% means.

Coming to you from the barely getting VDSL slums of the internet backwater.

I think they mean they are the only ISP to have coverage everywhere UFB is available. (100% 'coverage' being deals with every LFC and at every handover)

Every other ISP only has it in certain regions/LFCs and handovers.

Yup, Telecom has 100% coverage within the UFB networks ... but the UFB networks don't have 100% geographical/population coverage.

sbiddle: My pick is somewhere in the vicinity of $400-$500 per month for a 1Gbps plan. Maybe a bit less than that if you're looking at a low cost ISP who wants to deliver an average service offering.

I'd expect 1gbps to go for the same as 200mbps, I imagine usage levels would be similar with higher peek traffic. Obviously if its priced highly then only heavy users will use it, but snaps 200mbps plans could probably be pushed to 1gbps. That is assuming snap has enough subscriber base to pay.

I've heard Nanog users call 6mbps overkill, so dedicating 3mbps per customer perhaps? ($60 in transit) plus a decent cache and ape/six pipe and it might work. I'd say sub $200 may be possible, providing you have the customer base.

The message is consistant. Telecom wants to offer gigabit service (like any ISP), but won't until all LFCs are on board.

The message is consistant. Telecom wants to offer gigabit service (like any ISP), but won't until all LFCs are on board.

In some ways it's a similar argument with Enable offering a 106mb layer 2 service so that customers can get a 100mb speed test.

Currently those speeds 106 & 33 are not a CFH specification speeds so only enable offer it. And if your RSP has a consistent setup then you wouldn't get the advertised increase on Enable since the BNG Shaper would throttle speed before it went to the LFC access network therefore packets wouldn't get dropped and you end up with billing misalignment.

So really it's up to all LFCs to offer the same products since otherwise the journey taken to purchase as a customer then order as a RSP will need to be significantly different for each LFC which sounds like a nightmare to me.

So I just had a chat with Full Flavour Media, and they're trialling 1000mbit service in Tauranga and Hamilton! Unfortunately, UFF has paired it with a 30mbit upload. Talk about a non-starter. I just.. seriously don't understand how they could make that decision.

It's marketed as 20Mbps, but 1000/27 is the precise line rate of the circuit.

Their reasoning is to hinder businesses being able to settle with BS2 connections and getting them to purchase BS3/3a. They don't really care about what actual residential customers do, but you'd be interested to know that UFF/Enable/Northpower have announced they will bring their products in line with Chorus' and have a 200/200 product.

Also, the speeds you can expect to anywhere in Europe/US on Gigabit aren't any better than just having a 100/50 circuit. Aussie is nice, we got around 300Mbps to Sydney.

Not quite. the 1000 is a layer 1 rate so the layer 2 rates for both directions is more like 986/27.5 Mbps.
