Rang Slingshot 2nd time and told them the work has not been consented and above ground installation is not acceptable. They will get in touch with Chrous to rectify. If this hasn't been done properly prior to the internal wiring work I plan to refuse Visionstream entry to my property to complete the work.

Maybe tell them you would prefer a different subcontractor...I suspect they will not be surprised. Not that it will help; giving an Australian company the subcontract for Auckland was obviously an awesome idea. I bet the contract is ironclad from visionstream's point of view anyway

you could always give this guy a call

Down here the guys doing the work are salaried employees of Chorus. I suspect it makes all the difference

Customer Experience, eh. Is that because they don't provide service any more, and they can put everything down to being an experience?

Sometimes above ground installs are the only way to go due to pricing and timing (people dont get how much it costs to drill or gurundermant or ecen just open trenching then yhere re enstatement costs etc) altho sometimes it may not be attractive looking least ya getting fibre

I think it may be time to remember that these issues appear to be the exceptions not the rule. Anecdotally my parents install has been great. My mates install has been great. My team who deal with Chorus UFB installs for businesses are not having to deal with these types of issues to my knowledge.

While based on something I've seen in this thread I 100% agree some people should be upset lets not start making unfounded generalisations.

Not quite, the contract with Crown Fibre Holdings is quite specific... Chorus is to do the trenching as part of the install. If they don't want to do the trenching because it means a particular job is done at a loss...bad luck, shouldn't have signed the contract should they?

Just to share some good news.

A man in a Chorus shirt did our UFF install the weekday following settlement for the house, almost exactly a year ago. We booked it a few months in advance. It was an uncomplicated overhead install -- power and phone are overhead and our driveway is gravel and grass.

They put the ETP and ONT where I asked, ran the fibre through the roofspace (ONT in cupboard above the fridge, reasonably central location).

Once we'd agreed on how it would be done, I signed the form saying I consented to the work.

It's as beautiful as an overhead install can be.  I didn't take any pictures of it.

Sorry but I disagree.
Above ground is not the only option as I recently payed Vector gas for an underground gas pipe and cost me little over 1k. The installation is almost identical to the fibre work and since chorus is connecting both my and my neighbors house it should cost them much less per property.

But my biggest concern is how did this work get the go ahead when the home owner is not even consulted with the method of delivery and visionstream just went ahead with whatever is cheapest/easiest solution to them?

mdooher: And I am yet to see a domestic "surface install" in Dunedin. I don't think anyone here is dumb enough to stand for it

Here's one I saw yesterday, but I dont think drilling underground would have been very easy..

Red arrows dont show very well on the last photo, cable running along bottom of fence then up and across over the gate and up into the house very top right of the photo.

Think it's subbed out to Downer in Dunedin, isnt' it? My overhead install was OK and I'm happy enough with it, but there are aspects of it where you can tell they don't take a lot of pride in their work.

Actually you are correct, it is Downer and Chorus do the inspection. I found they do take pride in their work its just that some of them are very new.

Interesting, I wonder if it has been checked yet. Is it a student flat? or maybe the landlord refused permission to dig?
