SaltyNZ:
I'll bite: I argue for split pricing on wholesale copper. Let Chorus raise the cost in areas with active UFB service. That way, they can cover their rising costs and give subscribers incentive to move to fibre. Wherever they have not completed or do not intend to roll out UFB, reduce it, as the ComCom originally wanted. That way, those who can't have UFB don't get punished, and Chorus has an incentive to complete and expand the fibre rollout so as to get that copper service charge high again.

That just makes too much sense for it to ever happen. But I can see it not working on the areas that do not have chorus as the LFC. Perhaps they should encourage chorus to sell the copper to the local fiber company so that they have the same incentives to get more fiber in place in those areas?

I think it could still work even in non-Chorus areas. After all, if the argument is that Chorus doesn't want to keep supporting copper then allowing them to raise its price where another LFC has completed their rollout still makes sense. Maybe they just don't get it reduced as much in another's LFC area where the rollout is not yet complete. Or the LFC makes up the difference, which pits the onus on them to hurry up.

ISDN should be gone

How are you going to replace ISDN? And don't say VoIP. That's not an ISDN replacement, it's a voice replacement.

SaltyNZ I will support the call that Chorus be allowed to set what ever price it chooses in areas where regulated UFB is available subject to a 14 day installation time frame.

ie - copper in your street is $55 wholesale a month because there is regulated fibre in the street, but we have to provision your service within 14 days or the wholesale price is what it is currently regulated to in non serviced areas.

The purpose of my additional condition is to prevent Chorus from just pushing out installation times because they can collect more off the copper.

With over 100,000 homes now passed, I agree it's time.

I don't really care how you do what.

My point is simply that we have to push out these older technologies and get everything IP based.

I don't know what else you use ISDN for, but it's time we upgraded that kit and moved on.

Don't get me wrong Steve, the fact that my idealistic statement could be really expensive for some folk and impractical for others for a while, isn't lost on me.  But this is about attitude and I just think we need to have an IP attitude and get on with it.

ISDN is used extensively in the broadcast industry because it delivered balanced audio and if you bond 3 x BRI you get 320kbps which delivers an exceptionally high quality audio feed.

Quite simply right now there is no replacement for that. Period. The internet could theoretically replace it if you could deliver guaranteed CIR to the other side of the world, and replace all equipment, and do it for less than an ISDN call. But it can't.

The  Spark Digital sales people sure are pushing GVC as a replacement for ISDN these days.

Most broadcasters have moved to IP. Tieline products appear to be the most popular, at least in NZ.

Well considering how much of what the broadcast industry transmit that is overcompressed crap or else riddled with analog artifacts I dont think they really care about quality a great deal.

As a renter, knowing my landlord definitely wont pay anything into UFB (like 99% of Auck landlord scruge mcducks). Im happy as the renter to pay a cost to have it installed even if only for 6 months and then pay again where I go next if its available.

The problem I face isnt cost, its bodycorp. Am I meant to approach them? How does the process work, I cant just order it without consent from them and expect chorus to approach them right?

Life is a lot easier in single self contained dwellings, but not that many suburbs out of the central area have UFB yet and Id never rent a house in the central area. So its a catch 22 situation.

There is not cost to install yet, contact your ISP, they will tell you you need to get sign up from your neighbours/bodycorp, and give you a form, you then print it out, take that to the people/neighbours involved and sell them on the features/benefits of it, they will hopefully sign it off, give them a spare copy of the form, and you might not be the only one signing up :)

If you have a body corp then bring it up with them.

More chance there than a whole lot of self managed titles with you having to get sign off from everyone.

Yep there is a body corp.

Is there a cost to them and could it be significant for the MDU?

Im happy as I think we will be getting our vdsl sooner than I expected. But UFB would be be nice, not essential, but nice and cheaper per month strangely.

I think out of 12 units 11 here are rentals so would be hard to sell to individual owners as I would never know who they are. Luckily there is bodycorp.

im thinking about giving unlimitednet a crack next month as their vdsl is very cheap. would that mean i could potentially lose my port at the cabinet if I churn?

For voice yes, but not for broadcast.
