10Gbps WILL be a thing.

Right now its not really much of a thing. Most users don't require it at this point in time.

There are some customers who consume 10Gbps. I can give examples such as film-makers who need to get high qual video content back to places very quickly so work can start on it asap. And more applications can be ran over it. I used to think when Ultra 320 SCSI was replaced with SAS, that SAS was never gonna be a bottleneck. Well fast forward the clock to SSD's and we well surpassed that.

I think it's pretty cool of Chorus to be getting organised to use GPON tech to offer such speeds. For the majority of users right now it might seem silly. But in 2030 we will be having this same conversation about 100Gbps fibre.

Pretty hyped for 10Gbps. Games just keep getting bigger and bigger. Even Red Dead Redemption II put my gigabit connection to work at almost 100GB. its going to be even more important as Sony and MS move to an all digital future. Then streaming services keep moving into higher resolutions. Before you know it 10Gbps will be the norm. I could see a lot of folks bypassing gigabit and going straight to 10Gbps. Gigabit will eventually become the new entry level plan while 10Gbpss will be what Gigabit is now. It will start out as a luxury but will eventually get cheaper.

How much will be actual 10G to the customer, or in reality 10GPon with CPE that just have 1G UNI on them that provide low local loop contested access.

It would be interesting to know what the average contention is like on the OLT ports at the moment with more people going to the 200 and 1Gbps access plans. I suspect it would still be quite low as very few people are going to be full utilising their connections.

Un-contended 1Gbps is a really nice prospect though!

10Gps Ethernet enabled hardware is slowly trickling out, - the new Mac Mini and the iMac Pro support it, and I suspect others do or will do soon...

I wouldnt be surprised if we see 10Gbe in PCs pretty soon.

Given what Brent and I got up to with VDSL and a whole lot of voltage a few years ago, I'm sure he could twist someones arm.
Anyway, As long as the trial is not on and gear serving @hio77, I am fine witht hat.

Setting aside the entire debate about whether or not anyone "needs" 10Gbps...

I'd just like to say it is amazing that we are in a position to even have that conversation. And it's bloody awesome that Chorus are not settling for "good enough" but are pushing on and trying to jockey NZ into a position up there with the best in the world.

Compare what we have today to the state of New Zealand internet 10 years ago. It's enough to give you whiplash. In 2008 I would never have believed that in ten years' time, gigabit would be comfortably bedded in and 10Gbps would be on the horizon.

I don't think beach haven is on birkenhead, but on birkdale so I have no excitement at this stage about this trial.

If that is not the case, I will have to spend the replacement car budget on networking gear instead.

10Gb/s WAN and as backbone for 10x 1Gb/s clients - why not? 10Gb/s H/W (switches and NICs) are already availale on the consumer market at moderate costs. It's not a question of "need" - it's a question of when and how. Looking forward what we'll see in the future and I'll upgrade, when it's time to.

- NET: FTTH, OPNsense, 10G backbone, GWN APs, ipPBX
- SRV: 12 RU HA server cluster, 0.1 PB storage on premise
- IoT: thread, zigbee, tasmota, BidCoS, LoRa, WX suite, IR
- 3D: two 3D printers, 3D scanner, CNC router, laser cutter

There is a huge cost for ISPs to deliver the backend network that can support this kind of speed from more than 1 or 2 users.

You start to look at 100Gb backhaul and handovers (or multiples of 100Gb). None of this is cheap. I would not expect to see many ISPS offering this any time soon on mass to consumers except for 1 or 2 who want to use it for marketing and I can bet there backhaul and transit won't be increased to the same scale.

To give you an idea 10Gb Auckland to Hamilton DWDM transport from Chorus is just under 2k, 100Gb is just over 13k a month.

Auckland to Wellington just over 4k for 10Gb and 100Gb is just over 31k

The costs for 100Gb hardware for the backhaul / transit / peering (which is needed to support 10Gb connections) are often around are between 4x and 8x the cost of 10Gb (which can support 1Gb Connections). It does depend on the hardware you are using but it is a lot more expensive.

I can't see a lot of consumers being that keen to pay $400 - $800 per month for it.

I can certainly agree on the costs but... some of the larger rsps surely would have the bandwidth for that already...
