10Gbps WILL be a thing.
Right now its not really much of a thing. Most users don't require it at this point in time.
There are some customers who consume 10Gbps. I can give examples such as film-makers who need to get high qual video content back to places very quickly so work can start on it asap. And more applications can be ran over it. I used to think when Ultra 320 SCSI was replaced with SAS, that SAS was never gonna be a bottleneck. Well fast forward the clock to SSD's and we well surpassed that.
I think it's pretty cool of Chorus to be getting organised to use GPON tech to offer such speeds. For the majority of users right now it might seem silly. But in 2030 we will be having this same conversation about 100Gbps fibre.
