That's how the anti-porn law passed by the Shipley crew in the 90s works.

Guilty until proven inncent.

So it's easy to stitch someone up: just hide some kiddy porn in their garage and then tip off the police.

They are GUILTY.

NZ uses these laws so they don't have to spend money on prosecution / enforcement.

The justice system is VERY cheap if everyone is guilty all the time....and the powers that be could potentially get to decide who gets picked off.

Wide open to abuse. Few checks...no balance.

The number of customer I have seen over the past 12 months where their data has been used up by torrents run by somebody other than my customer is around 20 to 30.

The ways this has happened is due to poorly secured wifi or their username and password for their connection being guessed.

While ISP's take steps to protect customers from these sort of things there is only they can do. Don't infringe = no problem may be a fairly safe bet for the security consious Geekzone crowd but does not cut it for a law that presumes guilt.

I agree with most of the sentiment of your message.

To clarify mine: "If no infringing activity occurs on your connection, you have nothing to worry about."

Securing your network is a totally different topic (but yes, relevant in light of this stupid law).

There's a user on a private tracker that says they got one for downloading a movie but has since deleted the notice, so not sure if its true or not.

Edit: Just re-read the post, says they got the notice a year and a half ago.

Any comment from ISPs on what is happening to P2P traffic?

I know they came out and said it dropped just after this came into palce, but made comments about how they expected it to go back up, anyone heard anything more...

the stupid thing is it would have been cheaper to send the 5 people the Rhianna album than the $25 to send the notice,(i know stupid argument but its a stupid law)
