hio77: interesting that you got 17a after a bunch of reboots and so fast, from what i have read here, theres a low chance to get moved to it..

When VDSL was first rolled out you could request a 17a profile. Chorus stopped doing that around October 2011. DLM switches to 17a is a recent thing - it's probably only been happening for about 3 months.

maybe DLM moves you to 17a if your line seems to be having a lot of issues?

I doubt it. 17a is lower power than 8b so any interference is likely to have more impact on your connection with 17a, though there is more bandwidth available so it may be better able to deal with interference that is only appearing on narrow frequencies. I would expect that Chorus would only do manual changes to 17a on a bad line (and I'm not sure if they do). The 3 cases of people switching to 17a that I'm aware of were all very good lines. I think the worst was mine with an attenuation of 5db on 8b.

dan: Just got VDSL a few days ago, pretty impressed to far.

I didnt have any DLM changes for 3 days or so, stayed at the same speed it initially synced at, started of 46mbit down 10up and stayed that way until sparky kept switching the power off and on trying to isolate a crazy power issue ive been having in the house

after all those power resets i checked my VDSL and its at 63mbit down.

pretty happy.

Are you kidding me I have had a stable line for 9 months with similar stats and can't get 17a.  Might try the old on off trick.

@fellaintga: Your previous screenshot had attenuation of 7db which is quite a way off 5db isn't it? (given that it's logirithmic)

It's also important to keep in mind that you can't really compare attenuation on 17a with attenuation on 8b. My attenuation went from 5db to 7db when I went to 17a. Dan's attenuation on 8b would have been lower than the 5db he's seeing now.

Its 6dB at the moment with almost no errors.  My point is its crazy in a couple of days 17a and also Steve got 17a and you can't tell me the tolerance for getting 17a is that small.  We are talking within a 1Mbs sync rate difference for while we both on 8b profile.

There will be a attenuation threshold at some point that you can't cross and still be eligible for 17a. But yes, it is very odd to go from 0 to 17a in such a short time!

No it's more likely to be something we can't even see. They may look at the other lines connected to the cabinet, for example. We haven't got much of an idea about the criteria DLM uses to pick a level in 8b after all this time, let alone trying to figure out what causes a switch to 17a from only 3 examples.

Hi Gus

New to VDSL and just wondering if you can decrypt my modem stats if it's good or bad or suggestions for improvement.

I've always had excellent adsl2+ speed so didn't get a master splitter installed for now.

Looks like the important ones to keep an eye on are:

SNR Margin: 12.3db currently (normal)
Attenuation: 0db (VERY good if this is accurate, but you'd have to be basically living on top of the cabinet for this to be true!)
Rate: Downstream: 38.8mbit (not bad, but if your attenuation is accurate I'd expect higher than that), Upstream: 10.3mbit (normal)
Delay: 8ms (normal for this DLM profile: DLM-6)
INP: 2 (normal for DLM-6)
RS Uncorrectable Errors: 0 (Very good, but it's early days yet)

Overall, it looks like you may have a pretty good line there!  I would put a master splitter in or if you're 'naked' simply disconnect all unused jack points at the original incoming connect point. VDSL is much more fussy about this kind of thing than ADSL.

If you do that you're HIGHLY likely to be put on a 17a profile very quickly.

One odd thing I did notice was your modem's reported 'downstream attainable rate', which it listed as 42mbit.  This is strange because it should read 70mbit, which is standard across the board.  It may not mean anything however.

If I am on a profile that gives me 70/10 (DSL Line Speeds reported by modem) and I switch providers, will I get 70/10 from the new provider?

Thank you SamF!

Helps me with understanding what stats indicate a good connection.

I'm about 50 metres away from my cabinet. I'm actually with Full Flavour Media as my service provider. This 17a profile, can it be set by any provider? I'll now definitely ask them to have a master splitter installed so I can get the most from my setup.

Thanks again.
