It's probably to combat the amount of people that will downgrade from 500/100 (was 300/100) to 100/20 (was 50/10). I know I will be as I don't need much more than 100Mb down.

More likely the Netflix increase.

Just looking at the Spark offerings, as of today there is no increase indicated on the wireless plan bundled with Netflix to cover the price going up.

You do not need a new router.  You will not find a post here where the speed upgrade caused a service failure because of your existing router.

For future reference - if your upgraded speed is faster than the speed rating of your WAN cable to the router or router WAN port then an upgrade of cable and router is desirable but not necessary.

I know this, I'm trying to determine if the call is definitely a scam to warn others.

Not quite related to the Chorus rollout, but it may answer your question - Tuatahi are replacing their old ONTs, which is what the phone call MAY have been about. Apparently they are replacing a lot of their fibre gear and the old ONTs don't play well with their new equipment (as per the tech who did the install). Just had mine replaced (New Plymouth), but also received a letter and phone call in advance to book it in. Check whether you are in a Chorus or Tuatahi serviced area.

Or, it may have been a scam call getting in on the action...

This may be a silly question, but I got an email notification from Skinny that my "local fibre company is giving you a free speed upgrade" I'm in Selwyn and so my local Fibre company is Enable, however I can't find any news related to Enable upgrading the speeds of their plans? was this an error by Skinny or are Enable indeed increasing their speeds also but just haven't crowed about it?

Cheers

Depends on where you are in Selwyn. Parts are Enable, some are Chorus.

PolicyGuy:

Are the other players (Northpower, Tuatahi & Enable) going to follow?

I'm on Tuatahi's network and I'd probably downgrade from 300/100Mbps to 100/20Mbps to save a few dollars a month if it was on offer. 100/20 is plenty fast enough for me

We're on the Northpower network and we had an email from One NZ a while back that we were being upgraded to 500/100 so maybe the others will too.

A bit late to the party, but can confirm it now the comms have started going out. Mercury will be upgrading all customers as of the 1st of July across all LFC's.

Seeing 530/100 Mbps on Enable & 2degrees since yesterday - to the 2degrees ChCh Speedtest server. No email from the ISP, but at least Enable have that blog post up (finally!).
