So after having a "guy" in I have decided that I have had enough with Orcon. We are currently getting around 1mb down, and about the same up. Looking on this forum, I suspected internal wiring, nope. At least not slowing it down at this stage. I thought it would be the 5 year old modem, nope. Tried another new one, same speed. It seems that it is up to the ISP to sort out something on their end, oh wait I am with Orcon....gonna be a long journey to get this sorted. So I have decided to move to Telecom and see if they can help, plus they have better plans for money.

The tech said good stuff about Telecom, and in theory they should be quicker to respond to faults, I'm just hoping I can finally get my speeds above 1mb. :L

Excellent, are you aware or your line attenuation or noise margins?

Yes I think you should post your modem stats, that's actually going to help someone decide if a switch of ISP will actually help you.

I would be BEYOND surprised if this isn't a fault or misconfiguration.

Well if I am reading it right, your attainable rate is nearly 18x what you are actually getting. They are pretty excellent rates.

How are you measuring your speeds?

Normally just use speedtest to do some quick tests.

Speedtest.net? Perhaps try a couple of others and perhaps post the results here.

Yeah, there's two different people posting stats from different connections - getting confusing!

Phexx, how long have you been with Orcon? Do you know if you are connected on one of their ULL plans, or through Chorus equipment?

Have a read of sbiddle's blog and see if it may apply to you.

Oops, looking closer at your modem stats, you have a 6dB noise margin. This almost certainly means you are on an ULL connection with Orcon. If you are in an area where Chorus cabinets have recently been installed, then this is most likely the midspan injection issue. The fix is to get Orcon to move you to a Chorus (wholesale) connection.

I see, can I ring them up and organise this? Would be great if this issue can be fixed.
