Hi,

Signed up for the free Orcon install. Still waiting for a date but they rung today to get a few details. They also suggested I watch their video of an install (which I did - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hs__8cAvfmA&feature=plcp)

Now, with the OTN, where are people placing these things?

We have a 80's Lockwood. The current copper line terminates in the kitchen. I'd like to put the OTN somewhere else - I see its powered so near a outlet would be handy!

Current thinking is behind the TV cabinet or beneath some shelves along one wall of the lounge.

Where are people placing these things inside there house?

Hi. I have just had a UFB/Orcon/Chorus installation. I put a lot of thought into where the ONT should go, but when all is said and done, it just needs a quiet spot with power and an ethernet cable to your Genius modem/router.

My choices were on a garage wall not far from the ETP, under the house (dry, full head room space), or alongside my computer in our rumpus room.

I settled for under the house so the Chorus guys ran the fibre across the garage frontage, along the wall and through the wall to the under house area. From there I ran an ethernet cable through to my Genius router sitting close to my computer. The Genius was just a straight swap with my Thompson modem/router, basically.

Someone else had it put behind their TV. This didn't appeal to me but it would have worked fine as well.

I am sure wherever you decide will be fine.

The current line of thinking is that if no wiring/distribution cupboard exists that the best place is near the TV - it's typically a central point, has power, and also typically has multiple ethernet capable devices in your average home.

Mmmm good to know.

I might put it behind the TV then as its hidden from view and (like you said, its handy to plug in the Blu-Ray, games systems and TV etc).

If it were under the house, I assume the OTN reasonably weather proof? Its not like Id put my Thomson router down there!

A few more Q's;

- What are the typical dimensions of the OTN?
- Does it run hold/cold?
- When you said "ran the fibre across the garage frontage", how thick is this fibre cable? I'm wondering if they could push this up alongside my sky cable into the house?

My current copper comes into the garage, and I have my modem on the wall. My intention is to put the ONT (not OTN) in the same place when Chorus finally gets around to doing my street. There's a nearby power point and Ethernet cable which goes to my router, so I'm expecting to keep the same sort of configuration.

Does anyone know what the "output" of the ONT is? Will I just need to enter PPPoE settings into my router or is it more complicated than that?

It'll depend on the ISP; in the case of Orcon you just need to use tagged VLAN 10 (or the Genius which is pre-configured). No PPPoE etc.

PPPoE on VLAN10 for Chorus, I'm not 100% sure if every other RSP is using VLAN10 also.

Thanks. Yeah the Orcon video shows the ONT in the garage which is I guess is ideal except our garage isn't attached to the house and I guess it also assumes the house is wired up with CAT5.

Judging by other install photos/stories on Geeksone, looks like behind the TV is best.

Our copper terminates out a metal pipe under the house

- not convinced they will want to go there.

BTW, another install post said they rewired the copper at the same time. Is this usual? He did mention he had to ask for this, I think it was referred to as a hybrid install.

It is a bit irrelevant picking the TV location because of the supposed number of ethernet cables required there as the ONT is not a distribution routing device. It has one ethernet port so has to be connected to a router for distribution. If you choose the same location for the modem/router you have established that area for distributing to the rest of the house devices. It may not be an easy place to get cables to and from. You have to think of the best place in your own house to act as the distribution point.

In addition, most of us have so many wires behind the TV that the thought of adding two more multi cabled devices is not very appealing, especially if you have to wheel out the big TV and cabinet to get behind it!

In my case I already had an ethernet cable behind the TV feeding a wifi router so that area was covered.

The ONT placement is a bit irrelevant, actually. A lot of the time you choose to run a longer fibre and shorter ethernet cable or vice versa. Or you could make it awkward and require both runs to be long ones!

You will work out a good solution. Good luck.

I would advise to have it near your tv.

The network is designed for tv broadcast like any other fibre based cable netwok, and if using an IP decoder, your tv will probably be the big bandwidth consumer.
With the increased interference when telecom started handing out wifi routers for free, which resulted in less wifi range in most homes a few years ago, it means running a decoder using wifi is not practical.

The alternative is running cat5 from the ONT to the TV but that isnt always the easy, and homeplug / home PNA is still not good with distance either - even though it promises 80mbit+ but over a very short distance.

So i suggest place your ONT near your tv, and then you can distribute the signal from your decoder throughout your home using the existing RF coaxial cables like many homes with SKY currently do.

Even though there is no current need for it, you never know what UFB will be used for in the future and i believe tv is going to be one of the big bandwidth using services.

Surely, you are going to need an ethernet cable to the modem and network as well? In that case, why is it easier to run this cable FROM the TV area rather than TO it?

Or are you suggesting the modem also lives behind the TV, and the rest of the network is fed via wireless?

depends entirely on the house I think.

If, like me, your house is single level, wood construction, and has very easy access to underfloor (I have a gigantic basement you can walk through) , then it doesn't really matter too much where it goes as it is pretty simple to run ethernet cables to any room in the house for just the cost of the cable and the time to drill sme holes in the floor. In that situation then you just want to place it somewhere fairly unobtrusive, in a cupboard or something.

Correct, planning on putting the "genius" in the TV cabinet, up till now the phone/router has been in the kitchen which we are trying to keep clutter free...
