I've started a new job calling people from home for market research.  My phone and internet ran fine the last two nights up until around 7.30 pm and then the upload speeds drop right down and trying to phone someone is really difficult.  The phone drops in and out so on some calls I can hardly hear the other person.  Speed tests during the day are around 3 down and up.  Last night the upload speed was 0.28.  IT for the company said my connection is unstable, but it's fine during the day.   I'm on a desktop pc with a voip home phone.  The company also used voip.  I am looking at a new ISP, but are there any suggestions  to what's going on?  (Not a geek).

Thanks.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Palmerston North.

I turn off automatic updates while working.  I'm with Thinair Broadband.  A few weeks ago their technician arrived because my voip phone was nearly unusable and I was about to start with the company.  He attached a number of new wires to the modem and a newer aerial on the roof and it went ok for a week or so.  I am on ADSL.  There is no home alarm.

Just a thought. When I didn't have the VOIP phone and all the extra wiring, I didn't have any problems with speed.

My computer is a desktop PC. When I didn't have voip my PC was connected to the aerial on the roof .

With the voip I have a modem.

You're going to need to answer the quesions people are asking if you want elp.

Right now nobody knows if you're on wireless or ADSL because you've inferred you're on both. If you are on ADSL you'll need to provide all your modem stats.

There is no benefit to using a WISP when in an urban area where fixed line dsl services are available.

I have worked on the ThinAir network for a short time and did alot of fixes at customer's houses in terms of removing routers. They use the radio as a NAT router and then would often have a d-link router do NAT again and then have the ATA behind the d-link. Madness. I assume if their tech has been around any set up like this would have hopefully been fixed. If I were you though I would seriously look at just getting some fixed line adsl. It will fix many issues mainly because you will get support from a bigger ISP and on site support from Chorus for line issues.

Thanks. I guess I have to go back to Telecom.

Their tech. doesn't fill me with confidence. He's been back here several times for mainly the same problems and he usually looks terrified when the problem is explained to him.

You don't necessarily need to go back to Telecom. What you do need to do is explain your situation better. In one post you're telling us you have a wireless connection, and in the next you're tellins us you have ADSL.

Without knowing your setup unfortunately nobody help can help you.

Someone else said wireless.  I've explained what happens with my computer.  I don't know what else to say.

You mentioned wireless first in the title.

Note: ADSL refers to a connection over a copper phone pair to a telephone exchange or cabinet. It does not involve any antennas or wireless routing devices on your roof.
