Just a little 'Just Wondering' Forum post,
We suffer (Ok, a little exaggerated but you get the point) from poor internet speeds and quality from Woosh. They did well to get us is coverage but the term 'broadband' is getting a little stretched when our speeds might just get over 0.13Mbps. Need I say more.

I was reading in an Article online about Woosh deploying WiMAX type wireless broadband over the country. Then I read in a Wikipedia article that the WiMAX technology can get up to 100Mbps connection speed
Does anyone know whats up with that. What are the chances of my parents getting a decent internet connection?

Liam

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Hello PeterReader,
I read your post and you brought up some pretty good points that I didnt write about; Pretty good for a brainless forum member.
ISP: Woosh Wireless
Distance from tower: 13 km (no obstructions)
Our data cap has ran out, but 64 kbps is promised in the slowed down internet.
Yes I  did plug the Ethernet cable for the modem straight into my laptop.
Yes Nothing else was using internet, at all
Thanks once again PeterReader for your constructive......well.....cricitism

This would be helpful to know, or people cannot suggest alternatives.

13km shouldnt be much stress provided good line of sight is there.

I notice you say you have been capped... please dont tell us you are complaining about the speed when your connection is throttled. What is it like when it isnt capped?

I never found Woosh to be a good service in terms of speed but to be fair I was using it in 2007. Perhaps a different wireless solution such as RBI may be better?

Ok, lets start from the top,
We definatly live rurally, and our Road is Omutu Road.
We are capped and no im not unhappy with the capped internet, when we have our 2GB of "Full Speed" internet, we have about 40kbps, bypassing the router etc. The best ever speed I've seen here is 60kbps, and that lasted about an hour.

Yes, 13 kms is a good distance, that what was that got me wondering, thus this post :)

We started Woosh in 2007, and Dad said that the internet was fine then, but we were about 5 kms from the tower. (Dads internet speed standards are still very low)

I find it interesting they dont list any speeds on their site. All they list is their plans. I think this is either a poorly set up link or the backhaul to the tower is not adequate. I have set up links in excess of 30km that can push 10Mbps no stress. 2GB is a complete a joke for $45. Check out www.chorus.co.nz/maps and let us know what services are available.

Line of sight does not mean much at all, The Azimuth could be pointing down towards the ground so the end user could end up working right on the edge of the cell coverage

heres the elevation map from Google Earth..... If it helps

Yes, thank you Ragnor, that suggestion seems like it will be the best for us, and yes it is funny that they don't have any internet speeds on the woosh website, perhaps thats how they get cheap prices, but they dont even have that, $20 a GB is a little expensive

The maps on chorus say that 5MBPS is just around the corner... literally
