Hi

We live about 15 mins South of Christchurch - ADSL and dropped to unusable speeds and no short term chance of any improvements.  the RBI maps show as being in the area for RBI wireless.. but one prpovider came out and said that the maps are not right and in fact are very marginal where we are.

So I am looking into wireless broadband options on the basis that we can see the Port hills (where all the feeds seem to come from) - a few years ago we used  Scorch, so pretty sure we are still ok  with line of site visibility.

When I look around I see that there are a few providers ... just wondering if anyone recommended any or had any specific comments.

Scorch seem quite a bit dearer than the rest - a 10GB cap is just not enough - not for$105.

Compass seem the cheapest, but on another forum on this site they don;t seem that popular.  I tried calling the new sales line and got a 'mailbox is full message'.. was not an inspiring way to start.

Ultimate?   And also one i just spotted Netspeed.. which appears to be a Christchurch outfit.

Any advice appreciated.

 - thanks

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Out of curiosity, what were your 'good' adsl speeds and what are they now?
Do you have a master filter and only use one jackpoint for your adsl modem (as opposed to using those filters on every outlet).

I am currently with Ultimate on their RBI wireless plan, and cannot speak highly enough of the service I have received.  Mike and Jo leave no stone unturned in their efforts to provide the best possible service to their customers.  If you can receive at least one bar of Vodafone 3G signal, this will be worth looking into.

Prior to joining Ultimate, I was with NetSpeed for several years on their Extend service.  Stan also looked after me really well, and I have to say you are fortunate to have both of these companies to choose from in your area.

Hi

I have raised this issue on a different post.... but good 1.5 max down to .2 or so in the evening.
Now struggling to get past .5 anytime.

No master splitter etc.. I was prepared to go down this route and try ... but it seems that there is very limited capacity on the exchange and everyone has the same issue. Understanding is that there are no plans to upgrade and that RBI is the alternative for where we are.

ahh yes I think I remember your previous thread.
Yad think progress on your cabinet and / or exchange will occur sooner rather than later given the urban spraw heading towards you these days.

I had this problem.

Chorus couldn't give two bleeps.

Told them what I thought of their services, and moved into town.

Rural ADSL (ADSL1) services outside of Christchurch are really really bad, no matter how fast you sync to the cabinet, speeds are crap 24/7.
But as I said. Chorus are oblivious.

Sync to cabinet at 8128 / 832 kbps
Actual speeds, I personally struggled to get 1 Mbps / 0.5 Mbps.
Worst times were  0.3  Mbps / 0.1 Mbps.

Great for you tube.... skype... sharing with a household etc.......    (Waits for Chorus to figure out this is a joke)

Best of luck OP. Hope you manage to get a good wireless deal.
