Hi,
I am looking at snap as an alternative to Woosh. On the Snap website they advertise a 24Mbps down and 1.4 up for their naked ADSL2+ plan.
I live in Devonport (right on the end) and was wondering if I actually would get these speeds. I have looked at Snap's How Fast is Full Speed page so I know that what they advertise probably won't be true but still, is it close?
Thanks and I hope that this gives me an improvement over Woosh wireless's 0.7 Mbps download.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

While I don't know about your area,

Im on Snap UFB and I can download internationally at 12MB/sec so max out my line pretty easily at any time of the day
Also with a speedtest to sydney I can get around 90/30

That's on UFB. I only get ADSL2+ here.

Won't be getting fiber until 2016

I have only ever tried snap on VDSL and UFB but as long as your line and area support a decent ADSL2 speed then snap will be fast for you

They say that it depends on how far you are from an exchange? I have checked this out on connection type maps and in Devonport it looks like the nearest exchange is, an area?
How does this work?

, check your line attenuation on your modem and post it here, someone will tell you how far away you are . you could also look for a big green cabinet in your area and estimate how close you are.

Common sense is not as common as you think.

Speeds aren't determined by your ISP, they're determined by your distance from the exchange or cabinet and the quality of the internal wiring within your home.

I'm on Snap naked ADSL and I routinely sync at just under 18 Mbits down, 1.2 up. My downloads max out at around 1.8 MBytes. I live in Remuera, around 500m from the cabinet, IIRC. Don't have my line stats handy, but last time I looked, SNR and attenuation were both pretty good.

Perhaps look at VDSL if you can get it. That now includes a master filter install so should negate any issues that may be caused by your internal wiring, and is usually much faster than ADSL.

snap is outstanding, I'd highly recommend them.

I am on Woosh wireless so I don't think I will be able to check the line attenuation. Is there a map of all the exchanges?

plug your address in there.

If it says >10Mbps you can get ADSL2 and should get decent speeds on it
If it says >20Mbps you can probably get VDSL

Either of them will likely be a big improvement on woosh wireless I'd think! :)
