Good Morning

A question regarding broadband.

I currently live 20km out from Timaru but very close to a broadband cabinet (300m). I believe this cabinet was installed about 4 years ago and I was connected to this about 3.5 years ago (new house). Initially the connection was pretty good. (3.5mb/0.6mb up down). In the last year things have really deteriorated and in peak times 6-10pm we are down to 0.6mb download, up speed is about 0.5mb which seems stable.
The line connection has been confirmed by my ISP (Telecom) that it is good for 8mb download speed. I have checked all my connections etc and all seem good. Telecom have now told me the usual response I believe

" The problem was the equipment where you line is connected is quite old and has been marked as congested. There's no plan of relief and there's no plan of upgrade at the moment"

If I give the address of the cabinet can anyone give me more information about it and whether there is any upgrade possible of the cabinet in the future. Are there any options (upto $5k I am willing to spend) to get better broadband. I really don't want sat/other wireless option as latency is important to me.
Address of cabinet is on junction of Rolling Ridges Road and Fraser Road, Levels Valley. Timaru RD5

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

Sounds like you're on a Conklin.

Simple answer is there is no simple fix for your problem. If you're not being upgraded to an RBI cabinet as part of the RBI project your best option is to look at RBI Wireless.

A firm does do some sort of fixed wireless but not sure I if I can get it

It is an ASAM, a bit like a Conklin in the way it suffers from congestion etc but you're actually in a 5mbit area (so a max speed of 5mbit). Don't go Farmside unless if you want very high latency broadband.

I'd recommend contacting your local WISP - http://www.getwirelessnz.com - the prices on their website sound expensive but if you phone them and ask them to do you a deal I'm sure they'll come up with something.

If you can get a few other subscribers to put their 5k in as well, their might be some change to the "no upgrade" response. I would say 0.6Mbps is too fast for a congested Conklin, so might be an Alcatel ASAM. Slow copper backhaul causes the same problem and getting fibre to the cabinet has presumably been too expensive.

Time to find a new industry!

Ift he cabinet was only installed 4 years ago I'm surprised it is a Conklin. I'm thought chorus were only doing whisper cabinets after about 2008

I think they also said the old ASAMs from urban exchanges (since been upgraded to ISAM 2006-2009) would be redeployed in some cases to meet port demand in areas where there was suitable ATM fibre backhaul. The ATM backhaul is shared with probably 20 exchanges and cabinets so might only get 10 Mbps provisioned whereas ISAM backhaul is dedicated Ethernet.
