Hi,

I live in Whangaparaoa, and I was just wondering if these are usual speeds for Orcon ADSL2+ speeds. I get 7.2mbps down/.7mbps up.
On the Chorus "Network Capability Map" it says I can get up to 20mbps. If you need it, here are my line speeds from my routers managment panel:

Line Rate - Upstream (Kbps): 710
Line Rate - Downstream (Kbps): 7273

Downstream/Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 9.3/8.5 Attenuation (dB): 25.0/11.0
Output Power (dBm): -3.5/0.0
Attainable Rate (Kbps): 6660/716
Rate (Kbps): 7273/710
MSGc (number of bytes in overhead channel message): 60/65
B (number of bytes in Mux Data Frame): 27/22
M (number of Mux Data Frames in FEC Data Frame): 8/4
T (Mux Data Frames over sync bytes): 8/1
R (number of check bytes in FEC Data Frame): 16/14
S (ratio of FEC over PMD Data Frame length): 0.9811/3.9626
L (number of bits in PMD Data Frame): 1957  214  D (interleaver depth): 64/8
Delay (msec): 15/7

If they are usually higher as the Chorus page has said, how can I speed up my network? I am on the Orcon Unlimited plan with a phone line.

Thanks.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

Search Geekzone for 'splitter' or 'master filter'

Your issues are wiring related.

Are you testing over WiFi or LAN?

johnr: Are you testing over WiFi or LAN?

The speeds were directly from the router.

Thanks, I was reading up and found out about this. Turns out I had one but never installed it so I will install it and post results.

And are you sure you are connected at ADSL2+??

Since in the rural areas you may still be on an old Conklin or ASAM, so it will be ADSL1 and the backhaul will most likely be congested in peak hours.

But Orcon should be able to run a line test and tell you what's going on.

If the Chorus maps say VDSL he isn't on a conklin. I kjow they arent 100% but they are pretty spot on.

I would suggest a fault. The lines are not ISP specific possibly the xDSL gear in the exchange is. Just perform an isolation test and also get a Master filter installed. I live under 10 meters away from a cabinet on my road and get 22.9 Mbp/s downstream and 1.3 upstream. BEfore the master filter i got about 18-19 and it decreased my attenuation.

But isolate your connection, If you want i can check your address against our tools and see what you possibly would be able to get.

Cheers

Thanks for all the help/feedback. I am going to install a Master Filter over the weekends, and while I was at school I also got a call from Orcon telling me that they have modified my profile settings, and now I get 12Mbps. Thank you Orcon!

I have installed the Master Filter, and now I have more than doubled my speed since I posted this thread. Thank you Orcon, and I recommend that you install a Master Filter in your house.

"Modified" sounds like code for "we set it to ADSL instead of ADSL2+ by mistake" because you were previously getting ADSL speeds with some fluctuations that could still be improved by the master filter. Its the one with blue, orange and green wires coming out of it. You may need an RJ45 modem cable to connect the new ADSL outlet you are installing.

Time to find a new industry!

Hmm. Sorry to hijack this thread, but I wonder if this is the issue on my connection... I had thought about it in the past but figured it was nigh impossible that that would be the case.

My attenuation isn't as good as the OP's but it should still be good for ~15Mbps sync. However, we have no phones (naked DSL with a Genius). I don't know if there's a master splitter or not. But I wouldn't have thought it would matter that much since it's naked anyway. How can I get a line test done without calling Orcon (I'd rather not sit through a helpdesk call, and I'm not the account owner, my flatmate is, which complicates things) - or get them to check the profile is correct?

I believe I'm connected to the Johnsonville exchange (going by Chorus's map), not a cabinet, if that makes a difference.

Edit: Table got hosed when posted. Image time:

That looks like a wiring issue - do an isolation test and see what happens. Chances are you either need to install a master filter, or get the place wired so there is only one jackpoint connected.

Thanks. What's the best way to go about doing an isolation test? I assume by disconnecting any wires leading to other jackpoints from the demarc? I'm not by any means an electrician so I don't want to mess around with anything that would require any re-soldering or whatever. I should also note that there's a house alarm. However I don't know if it's monitored. Either way, it's never used, so I would be surprised if it's still monitored, so if it is connected then I guess it can be detached.

Also, what makes you think it's a wiring issue?
