Okie Dokie, I'm moving to a new house in the next 2-3 weeks and just had a check out of the property when it comes to telephone cabling:

1) There are telephone jack points here, there and everywhere and I'd fear to know what the mess is like underneath the house as the cable has probably been sliced and decides 100 ways; am I better off trying to get Chorus to fix up the mess when they hook up VDSL2 or are there any Geekzone folk who can do the rewiring for the cost of the wire plus some cash in hand?

2) How does one find the location of the cabinet closest to ones address? basically I'm looking for some sort of guidance as to the speed I'll get given my location and proximity to the cabinet; I've done a street check (on Google and going for a walk about) but I'm wondering whether it is located.

3) I'm looking at Vodafone (once again) and wondering what peoples experience is in that area because up at Upper Hutt I experienced routinely stalling of loading up videos, resolving websites etc. as I'm looking into getting the 150Mbps speed. Websites I visit include YouTube, Fora.tv, Vimeo, as well as the usual websites such as Arstechnica, Neowin etc. Has there been an improvement in international capacity? it felt like I was sucking up a chicken through a straw the last time I used the service.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

1) If you get VDSL it includes installation of a master filter which will isolate your broadband from whatever mess there is, so you can basically ignore it.

2) I don't think there is currently a way for the public to find this out easily.

3) I thought you were looking at VDSL? :)

All good - I've located the grey mushroom where the telephone cable comes out so I guess I'll just request them to hook it up through the wall rather than cabling it under the house.

2) I don't think there is currently a way for the public to find this out easily.

All good, I'll have a scoot around my scooter - I'm sure I've probably just missed it

Keeping my options open - I'm going to see whether I can get this modem instead of the current one I have but if Vodafone offer something better then I'm open to alternatives. If I go for Telecom I'll ask for their 'naked' option rather than paying for a telephone functionality I'll never use.

I threw my address in there and compared it to the chorus map but it appears there is no cabinet in my area which is a bit strange.

Edit: Would it be correct that I'd connect to the closet cabinet on the map or are there cabinets missing?

From my experience the map is fairly accurate, but do bear in mind that it only shows cabinets not exchanges.
All the local cabinets connect back to the NAE exchange, looking at the map I would say is somewhere on High st would be my guess

I believe you'll be collected straight to the exchange itself which is here: http://goo.gl/dMH4Fr
