Hey all,

We got Telstra broadband back in the day because they took over the Saturn network and it meant reliable TV including Sky.

Now it's time to consider options and the best place to do that is here.

We use 30 GB a month which seems fine and it doesn't have to be warp speed but we watch video on demand, such as TVNZ or YouTube, so it has to be fast enough for that.

Cable Sky has been good a Wellington is notorious for bad TV reception but maybe there is a better way?

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I would say with digital TV as analogue TV has shutdown now you would get excellent coverage across all of Wellington, or go for Sky if that's what you still want.

Then it's just up to decide which ISP you want.... And Telecom are pretty good :)

That's actually kind of funny to me due to the kind of work I do but it would take a while to explain why.

Anyway, the speed is fine thanks. The reason for my post is that historically Wellington has had bad TV reception, probably better now due to the digital switch, which was the original reason for the Saturn/ TelstraClear/ Vodafone cable TV service.

Urban Wellington has, again historically, had slightly different broadband service due to this cable network which was built in the late 90's. I remember TelstraClear saying that their network here in Wellington was vastly better than anybody else but that is going back a few years. I'm not sure but I don't think the rest of the country ever had cable Sky, could be wrong. I'm guessing Sat dishes work fine here?

So, it was more of a general 'is there anything different about being in Wellington'? kind of post.

I am in Wellington (Maupuia) and use a Freeview recorder for TV and SNAP for phone + broadband (50GB for $75). Works for me. Speeds on DSL went up hugely with cabinetisation a few years back. We get about 13 Mbps
