So I'm looking at moving over to VDSL with Slingshot. (though undecided who yet, may also be snap).

My question is, what is required by the tech to do onsite? My concern is I live in an apartment complex in Gulf harbour, does he have to run new cables anywhere? If so, am I likely to need permission from the neighbours?

Also since I'm renting, will I need permission from the owner?

on a side note, I get around 17mbps sync rate of ADSL2.. is it acceptable to think I'll get a considerable speed difference moving to VDSL?

Based on what I've read, I'm looking at the DrayTek Vigor DV130 as my modem of choice, bridged to my DD-WRT WNDR3700, just need to get this wiring crap sorted out.

Hello... Our robot found some keywords in your post, so here is an automated reply with some important things to note regarding broadband speeds.

If you are posting regarding DSL speeds please check that

- you have reset your modem and router

- your PC (or other PCs in your LAN) is not downloading large files when you are testing

- you are not being throttled by your ISP due to going over the monthly cap

- your tests are always done on an ethernet connection to the router - do not use wireless for testing

- you read this topic and follow the instructions there.

Make sure you provide information for other users to help you. If you have not already done it, please EDIT your post and add this now:

- Your ISP and plan

- Type of connection (ADSL, ADSL2, VDSL)

- Your modem DSL stats (do not worry about posting Speedtest, we need sync rate, attenuation and noise margin)

- Your general location (or street)

- If you are rural or urban

- If you know your connection is to an exchange, cabinet or conklin

- If your connection is to a ULL or wholesale service

- If you have done an isolation test as per the link above

Most of the problems with speed are likely to be related to internal wiring issues. Read this discussion to find out more about this. Your ISP is not intentionally slowing you down today (unless you are on a managed plan). Also if this is the school holidays it's likely you will notice slower than usual speed due to more users online.

A master splitter is required for VDSL2 and in most cases will improve speeds on DSL connections. Regular disconnections can be a monitored alarm or a set top box trying to connect. If there's an alarm connected to your line even if you don't have an alarm contract it may still try to connect so it's worth checking.

I recommend you read these two blog posts:

- Is your premises phone wiring impacting your broadband performance? (very technical)

- Are you receiving a substandard ULL ADSL2+ connection from your ISP?

I won't comment on what Chorus should so in this situation as that seems to differ so rapidly between provinces. In an apartment building I wouldn't expect Chorus to run a cable back to the demarc but these days they normally have at least a 6-way which tend to work ok on VDSL.

But in terms of routers/modems I would suggest he Zyxel over the Draytek as there was issues with bridging the DV130. I think that has been fixed as long as you have access to beta firmware from Snapper but if it was me I would just stick to Zyxel because they seem to be just as stable as a DV120 and take less than a minute to bridge to whatever router you would like to use.

I'd recommend looking at the offers out there on the market. From what I've seen Slingshot [may] not be the best to supply bandwidth for a high performance technology like VDSL or UFB especially if they're having issues supplying bandwidth to their existing userbase on ADSL. For me, the main reason for going to VDSL was speed, I do quite a bit of work on servers hosted overseas and need low latency + decent speeds to them, this is why I'm with a major ISP who has a proven track record.

Anyway, for me Chorus did nothing with my line since I already had a master filter, I've witnessed hundreds of installs and can confirm that it's a pretty painless experience getting a master filter installed in prep for VDSL :)

Just my 2c

Thanks for the replies.

Michael, who are you with may I ask? Telecom? I would consider them, but it was just the price point really. Slingshot on ADSL2 at the moment seems to get almost line speed most of the time.

chevrolux, I will also look at the other modem. I know there was some reason I didn't consider it though (not that I Remember now!!)

When I think of Slingshot I don't think performance. I think leechers.

I would suggest either Snap or Telecom. Telecom sure as hell have the network to back it up but maybe just no the competitive pricng. Snap seem to have the network speeds as well as the excellent price point.

Yeah I'm with Telecom mainly since even during peak time I can max out my connection, support is great etc. Personally, if you're going for a high speed connection like VDSL or UFB cheaper is not always better, go with an ISP with a proven track record in speed like Snap or Telecom to save future frustrations.

Okay, well that sorts that.

I've signed up for Snap VDSL.

My problem now is, what modem do I get?

The two I'm looking at is the Draytek and the ZyXel.

The only thing holding me back from the Zyxel one is the fact that it can't do IPv6 by the looks of things.

i always got line speed on slingshot adsl to local servers, international bandwidth is allright, heres a test to internode in California on slingshot VDSL

heres one to internode in sydney, australia

heres one to snaps christchurch server

my line speed as of right now is 44Mbps down and 10 up.

i tend to get 4MB/s on steam, origin, windows updates, popular torrents in slingshots (awesome) torrent cache. youtube is still good as it was on adsl, would start playing the video as the page loaded.

my nana changed from slingshot ADSL to telecom for the free modem and her line speed dropped and instead of getting 17Mbps she now gets about 10 from the change off slingshots own gear back to the chorus gear.

to summarise, slingshot have been noting but good for me whereas all the dealings ive had with telecom have been completely awful (go large, making us lose our port when we changed to slingshot)

*Insert big spe*dtest result here*

Thanks for that.

I've been reading up on VDSL, and I see that people are also saying that you have to meet a minimum requirement for line attenuation.

I should I be at all concerned with these stats with moving to VDSL? am I likely to not see a great increase in speed?

FYI, these are my ADSL2+ stats.

My speeds was worse than yours, about 14/1. Now on VDSL it's 38/10.

at 12db, in adsl2, you will be borderline.

snap have allowed your signup, so you should come under the 10.8db at prequal.

shouldnt be too far reach to land atlest 30/10

The 10.8dB prequal measure is not measuring the same frequencies as the ADSL one on your router is.
That connection is easily in the bounds of VDSL.

If you are getting 17/1.2Mbit, you are easily in vdsl speeds of around 30 up to around 45mbit.
